Chairman’s Corner

Well done to all the medal winners at last week's Cross Country presentation evening. There were some stand-out contributions to the teams and Tom reported on a wealth of PB's via his excellent stand-in presenter, Anita Cryer. Many thanks also to Paul and Daniela Cousins for organising the medals and trophies. I hope we have even more members and winners along next year to make it a real Club celebration evening. I am delighted to say we have a new Club Treasurer in former athlete Andy Simpson. It's great to have him on board. If you are spending money on Club expenditures please let Andy have the details and receipts so that he can reimburse you. He has a pigeon-hole in the portacabin; clearly note who is the payee for the reimbursement. Whilst on the matter of money, the Committee has voted to ask for contributions towards the cost of coach travel this season, given the significantly higher cost of transport. A charge of £2 per athlete and parent was decided on so be prepared to cough up! Good luck to all our Track and Field athletes as the season gets under way. Neil chairman@wokingac.com
Raising the Club's Profile

I have been asked by the committee to set up a small group to help raise the profile of the club so more people know about us so we attract new athletes, officials and helpers. This is very important for the future of the club as I feel we are currently not that well known in the Woking area. I have a number of ideas of how this could be done but I need other ideas and support to carry this out. I'm sure people have plenty of different ideas of how to do this. If you are interested in being part of this then e mail me on noddyh1@hotmail.co.uk, ring me on 07960 617738 or find me at the track on a Tuesday or Thursday evening before or after training.
Young Athletes Meeting 2nd September

DIARY DATE: SUNDAY 2nd SEPTEMBER It may seem a long way off but that is only a MYTH and organiser Mike Goodwin has already started entering names in his “Wonderful People” book. So if you are available for a couple of hours/PM or AM or even ALL day Mike would love to hear from you. This helps him distributing and putting Names to Jobs and not having to leave it until the last minute. Thank you all. I shall only be able to put this little reminder in three (3) more times. So put SUNDAY 2nd SEPTEMBER in your diary now. Mike is looking for around 100 “Wonderful People” to make this another successful Woking YA meeting.

This is the first year of this award and many thanks to all those that competed in road events for helping me gather their PBs. The record book that has them all in will be left in the Porta Cabin for anyone wishing to check and also IF there any missing PBs write info on paper and I will enter them for 2012/13. And remember after the age of 35 M/F you count PBs in FIVE year age groups. Maybe next year to make it more competitive and fun. Have 1st, 2nd and 3rd medals. Male Winner: Jimmy Brown. Female Winner: Ramona Thevenet A little interest Over the year since April 2011 the combined total number of Men/Ladies athletes achieving a PB was 40 and the combined total of PBs was 138. 26 Men achieved 76 and 14 ladies achieved 62. MEN’s Winner: Jimmy Brown achieved 11; Gilbert Grundy 9; Michael Baggott 9; Malcolm Vaughan 7: Richard Baggott 6; Mike Warner 5; Ashraf Ould-Dada 4; Kim Warner and Geoff Williams 3 each; James Thomas, Dave Gibson, Andy Green, Dave Nichols, Mike Waine, Jason Harris, Phil Cross 2 each. The year starts from Sunday 1st April. Good Luck to you all.
Ladies Achievement Cup: Iris Holder.

Every athlete has a tough time training to win and achieve the standards that they set for themselves. My job is twice as tough watching and noticing some wonderful performances. I try to make it easy by awarding a point every time a female T&F athlete has worked hard to achieve their target. If they are pleased with their own performance it’s a sign they are pleased with their training and achieving something. When there are 7 or 8 very close in contention like this year I go back a year then another year and so on. I had to keep going back a long way this year as there were some brilliant performances from so many individuals. And every year I went back Iris Holder just kept in front of the others and also eliminating one by one by a point. Looking back through the years Iris has achieved some fantastic awards in all her different age group vet years. Including winning Club/County/National/European and World championships events and records too. Even as recently as February in the Vet’s indoor champ’s came away with 3 gold medals and three 0/70 CBP. And more recently as 11th then 18th of this month Iris broke two UK Indoor records (LJ 3.49) (TJ 7.16). And Iris has also increased her enthusiastic Tuesday training squad from just Linda Baldwin to ten and they never fail to turn up whatever the weather. Plus her knowledge/experience as the clubs First-Aider. And also a graded T&F official. (All Achievements) Iris had many/many challengers for this year’s choice BUT!! again Achieved. If I gave everyone a vote I am confident Iris would have still won. Well done Iris.

London Marathon April 22nd

For all members that are thinking of having a day out watching the LONDON marathon on April 22nd to cheer sponsored friends there are 9 men and 7 ladies from the club competing BUT! they will not all be wearing Orange & Green vests as the few that got a REJECT entry are running for a Charity so they are obliged to wear the Charities Vest. Look out for Rose Nicholson, Laura Hales, Miche Oldham, Ramona Thevenet, Jaydee Hunt, Justin Mitchell, Jason Harris, Phil Cross/Paul Dennis, Mike and Kim Warner and Michael and Richard Baggott. NOT necessarily in that order. Also one word of advice when shouting encouragement shout their surname too as there are hundreds with the same CHRISTIAN name.

Apologies

Apologies before the year ends. Glancing through the road records I noticed one that I had over looked in April. Justin Mitchell ran 2.33.02 in the BOSTON (USA) Marathon on the 18th of April. (As printed in the May issue of Cockcrow). Unfortunately I never altered the record book. The previous senior men’s marathon record of 2.36.08 and was held by Clive Hensby that he ran in the London April 1996. It has taken 15 years well done Justin. I’m sure Clive will be surprised that the record lasted that long.
Southern Athletics League

As many of you may already know Woking will be competing in the Southern Athletics League this coming 2012 summer season. For those of you that don’t or do but want more information I have written a short article outlining the league and why we’ve decided to join. The ‘breakaway’ league was set up in 2011 where men and women compete as one team, rather than the ‘traditional’ Southern Men’s League and Southern Women’s league where the senior men and senior women compete separately. After consulting with many of our senior athletes and officials in both the men’s and women’s teams there was a unanimous feeling that we would like to join the league. This feeling has seemed to have spread across other clubs with the number of clubs entering the league has risen from 40 in 2011 to 76 clubs entering for 2012 and the likelihood of more joining in 2013. We are in the Southern 2 Central league, with 5 matches and 4 teams per match which means there are 16 teams in our league. There are four regional division 2 leagues and a division one. Promotion and relegation is quite complicated as the league settles down in regards to numbers so if you want to know come and find me and I will try to explain. The events will be the same for men but the women will have the added joy of the steeple-chase at each match. There will still be the opportunity to gain promotion to the British League if one side of the club feel that they could challenge in the promotion match and would be able to qualify through a ‘paper match’ where performances from different clubs are compared on paper to see who would qualify. There is also man and women of the match awards at each fixture for the best performance on the day which is great incentive to do well. There were a number of reasons why we’ve decided to change leagues. Firstly, and probably most importantly, it should lead to more of a club feeling and we’re competing as one rather than a men’s team and a women’s team. It will hopefully increase team spirit and camaraderie within the senior athletes across the club and enable you to see the performances of the athletes you see training week in week out instead of hearing about them second hand Secondly it will improve the atmosphere at matches as inevitably there will be more people there. Sometimes, especially in single matches, there was an extremely poor atmosphere and was sometimes eerily quiet which is not attractive to athletes competing and could also have a knock on effect on performance. Thirdly at the moment under 11’s right through to under17 boys and girls compete alongside each other in the Quad Kids, Wessex League and National Young Athletes League so it makes total sense that this continues when they get to the senior leagues. Fourthly there should be a benefit to our invaluable officials. Instead of having 10-12 senior matches to officiate at each year there will now be only 5, although the field officials maybe working harder at these matches as they will have more events to officiate but at least they will have a few more Saturdays off in the summer! Finally it gives those that have competed in the Southern Men’s League and Southern Women’s leagues for many years something fresh to look forward to and aim for which is always good for us older ones! Inevitably there maybe a few teething problems but the club feels that this is the best way forward for officials and more importantly the athletes. We held back in 2011, when the Southern Athletics League first started, from entering the league to see how well it went and to also give the Southern Men’s and Women’s leagues a chance to come up with proposals of a possibility of their own mixed league. They were unable to come up with anything so we, along with 35 other clubs, decided to join the new Southern Athletics League. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to find me at the track and ask me. There is also the Southern Athletics League Website, www.southernathletics.org.uk/ We have also decided to enter the Rosenheim League this year. This a ‘low key’ league on a Wednesday night for both senior men and women but without the pressure of scoring points so you can compete in what you like. It will give an opportunity to those coming back from injury to ease their way back into competing, to compete in events you might not get an opportunity to do at a Southern Athletics League meeting and to those who may not quite get into the senior team. There are 5/6 matches a year and are all fairly local, Kingston, Walton and we may be hosting one as well

Chairman’s Corner

Well, another year over and a successful one for the Club. Many thanks to all the coaches, helpers and officials who have made this possible. Our thoughts turn again to New Year resolutions, so if you are trying to choose one, why not consider offering to help the club in whatever capacity you can. Everyone has something to offer, whether it is serving hot cuppas on winter training evenings or taking up a coaching course. Please see one of the committee if you can offer time for the Club. Good luck to our athletes as your winter training and competition continues and to all those preparing for the new Trackers term. Winter is still to hit us I'm sure, so I'll leave you with this joke in expectation of snow to come. What did one Snowman say to the other? Can you smell carrots? I wish you all a very happy and successful New Year. Neil chairman@wokingac.com
Chairman’s Report

Just a quick report so that you can get on with your Christmas shopping, except you chaps who do it on Christmas Eve! The winter weather has yet to hit us but the Club is prepared by using the warmth of the Community Hall on Thursday evenings, with our coaches leading circuit style sessions. Thank you to Kim Warner and Jenna Tarrant for organising a very sociable pub do last night. Hope you are fresh for your weekend runs and training! We still have very important vacancies in helping the club function properly. We especially need a Treasurer who can pick up the reins from Liza in the near future. The other vacancies are Club Secretary, Publicity Officer and Coaching Co-Coordinator. Nothing too onerous honest! If you would like to know more about these roles and feel you would like to be involved in the smooth running of our Club please let me know, Merry Christmas to you all!
Christmas Closing Dates

- the track will close after training on THURSDAY 22nd DECEMBER and RE-OPEN on TUESDAY 3rd JAN. (No rebate of SUBS). Have a nice holiday. (Go for a run over the common Christmas day in your new trainers) Mind the MUD.

First Aid Course

As it is becoming increasingly difficult to provide first aid cover at home matches, the South West London Athletics Network if putting on a one day Sports Specific First Aid course from 10am - 5pm on Sunday 4th December at St Mary's University College, TW1 4SX. If anyone would like to attend please contact kate.brook@swlan.org.uk for details and booking. This would greatly help the club to provide the necessary cover at home matches and on club nights. Please let helenhenderson@talk21.com know if you are able to help. Many thanks
Congratulations to Ian and Haley Tullet

Woking 3 mile Event

First Wednesday of the month. Over the past 23 years Jimmy Miller has reached the age of 90 and has decided he is unable to carry on with the event owing to other priorities. There are feelers going about to try and see if anyone would care to take the job over. Also it would be a wonderful thing if all those who have run this event even once were to turn up at the Woking Leisure Centre on Jimmy’s last time that will be WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 7th either to run or say a big farewell for his many years of dedication in all weathers. Have an hour off work, leave the ironing, hoovering and just pop along to say a friendly THANK YOU. Hoping you can all make the effort. Also come along and see the “NEW WOKING PARK” and BRIDGE.
Chairman’s Report

Thanks to everyone who helped at the Track & Field Presentation Evening, especially Eleanor and Craig for organising and announcing. The children's disco next door did not manage to mar what was a very sociable evening. Congratulations to all those who received medals and trophies. Our youngsters and seniors alike worked hard for their awards and the Club's performances in the Leagues reflected that effort. Tom's new awards for PBs were warmly welcomed and it proved an eye-opener just how many are accumulated through the season. If this winter is as harsh as the last couple then the introduction of indoor training on Thursdays from the 17th at the Community Centre will prove very welcome. Joe will be informing all coaches about this opportunity. Good luck with the winter training and road and cross-country competitions coming up. Neil chairman@wokingac.com

Chairman’s Report

Well if we'd had the current weather for the Young Athletes Champs it would have been perfect! Despite the downpour we had midway it was another very successful event for the Club and I want to say a huge Well done to our organisers, officials and all other helpers who made the Championships work so well on the day. September also saw the re-start of our Trackers sessions and with up to 60 youngsters it is keeping Joe and Co busy. Well done all of you. The incorporation of UKA's Athletics 365 training programme will show that Woking AC takes seriously the development of the Club's younger athletes whilst retaining the vital element of fun. Let's face it, they all love a relay! Another fresh development is the rebirth of Trackers Plus on Thursday evenings, led by Sandra Hewett and David Middleton. These sessions will be an excellent way of introducing the 11+ youngsters into the main club sessions. If anyone would like to be qualified as a track or field official there is a course coming up at Walton on Sunday 16th October. I'll pass on details if you are interested. Final note, First Aid provision is sadly lacking at our home events and when athletes train, so if there is a parent out there who is qualified and could be available for any home events please make themselves known! The Club will arrange training if there is new interest. Neil Chairman@wokingac.com

Chairman’s Report

A short report this month you'll be pleased to know as we are busy preparing for the big day on the Club calendar, Sunday's Young Athletes Open Championships. With 385 athletes having entered it is sure to be a great day, whatever the weather! My thanks go to the organising team who have done a great job, from setting up a new entries system, arranging sponsorship, arranging all the entrants’ numbers and start lists to arranging all the officials and helpers into the many roles required on the day through to preparation of the track and field and catering. The track clear-up day was well supported by our loyal band of helpers; I would just love more of the parents to be involved in helping with such Club activities. I wish good luck to the coaches and their helpers who will be starting the new term for Woking Trackers and Trackers Plus this month. Don't forget, the Club will pay for coaching courses for those who would like to commit to helping with developing our athletes, whatever their age. Neil.

Chairman’s Report

It's been an action-packed season for youngsters and seniors alike and I congratulate all of you who have earned points for the Club in the league competitions or for gaining personal bests. A particular mention goes to Jack Phipps who celebrated a PB of 4.75m to come 6th in the Pole Vault final of the European Youth Olympic Festival in Turkey on Friday. Well done Jack. The Club loves to see the youngsters doing well and enjoying their athletics and the highlight for us is our Young Athletes Open Championships on 4th September. Entries are coming in well, with over 200 individual event entries received to date. One thing we do need is more helpers particularly on the field and with refreshments. We would be delighted to hear from you at helenhenderson@talk21.com if you have not already volunteered. As preparation of the track before the event we have our Clear-Up Day on Sunday 21st August. If you can spare sometime between 10:00-12:00 that will be appreciated. Also on the theme of youth this month, if there are any Duke of Edinburgh award scheme youngsters out there who would like a community/sports project then the Club will welcome them to assist the coaches on the Monday Trackers evenings starting again in the Autumn term. Chairman’s Corner

Firstly this month I would like to inform you of a change in Trackers coaching come September. As you know Virginia and Tony Mitchell, assisted by other coaches, have been running the Trackers group very successfully for the last 5 years but they have decided to give up the reins at the end of the summer term. I would like to thank them on behalf of the club and all the young athletes who have benefited from their dedication. Trackers will continue with qualified coaches on the same voluntary basis that we have had up to now. We will be reviewing our coaching structure shortly to decide how Trackers and Trackers Plus can best be integrated as part of the main Club. I hope that the coaches currently helping on Mondays will continue to give their valuable time and I am also grateful to other coaches who have come forward to help. I would like to thank Ann Sprigings who has decided to give up the Trackers administration now for personal reasons. More on Trackers soon! My second topic is a brief but loud call for assistance from parents to help at two very busy junior home matches coming up on Sundays 12th and 19th June. Woking AC prides itself in putting on a well-organised show when we host matches, as witnessed at the very successful double senior’s matches last Saturday. We need your help in particular with manning the car-park and refreshments. If you or someone else in the family can spare at some time on these days please let me or Helen on helenhenderson@talk21.com know. For refreshments please contact Fran on f.dyble@btinternet.com. For your information, the club now susbscribes to Athletics Weekly and the current copy can be found in the Portacabin. Please return after use or photocopy any information you require. Thank you Neil
Dave’s Run/Swim/Nosh

Dave’s Run/Swim/Nosh is on Sunday 7th August. Maps and directions are available from Dave. FREE Car-Parking all day. FREE Swimming all day. FREE Entry for the run. And you are FREE to do as you wish all day accept play cricket properly. Bring your friends FREE. The tide will stay in while you have a swim and will go out one minute before the first ball is bowled and then come back in when Dave’s team look like losing. Please wear something WHITE in-case you are batting/bowling after midnight
P.Beez Award

The committee has agreed to donate an award for the athlete achieving the most PBs in a T&F season April 1st to the Woking YA September meeting. One award to each section Male/Female. There will also be an award for the road section (Male/Female) this will be over a 12 month period From April 1st till Mar 30th. In both competitions from the age of 30 your PBs will count in 5year age groups. I will ask after all meetings but if I miss you just tell me or email me. A small mention about the PBs. Just take a look at the P-Beez Honour List below, the amount achieved in the first two months of the track season. Not having taken much attention over the past 40 odd years I am surprised at the number. Is this the norm? Have we only known of our friends PBs and missed all the other athletes’ best performances. Myself I am impressed and glad to know that whatever age group we are still trying to gain even a sec. /cm. or metre. Good luck to everyone. If you have a PB please tell me/Coach/Manager and I will let the world share your enjoyment
Men’s Surrey XC Lge

Remember those wet/muddy XC shoes you were going to clean the morning after the final fixture (Or did you forget) well lads it’s time to brush the mildew off them. Here is the men’s fixture list: The first one is a double fixture Men/Ladies at Lightwater on the 8th October. To all willing marshals please put your name on the list quickly to save being disappointed and missing out on the fun. AS IT WILL STILL BE VERY WARM! This year I shall make the closing date for marshals the 8th October. After we have cleared-up the next fixture is Sat. November 12th at Epsom Downs; then 2012 Sat. 14th January TBC; And guess where the last fixture on Sat. February 11th is. Lovable Lloyds Park. So for Christmas you need Spikes/Studs/wellies and 4/5 pound coins for the parking metres.
Club Records

Ramona Thevenet Smith 0/50 lowered her own ½ marathon record of 1.35.51 by a staggering 3 minutes to 1.32.44 in the Richmond ½ event on Sun. 8th May and also broke the 5mile road record of 43.21 held by Sylvia Steer MBE since May 1994. Ramona ran 34.07 at Windsor on the 28th May. One small rectification concerning a club record at the Vets. Lge. Portsmouth match on April 30th. Alan Davidson was given Jimmy Brown’s time. And Jimmy given Alan’s time Jimmy’s actual time was 5.36.8 that broke the existing 0/60 1500m record.
Many/Many Thanks from Kim Warner

Many/Many Thanks from Kim Warner for the wonderful gifts that many members bought along to the club for the children of the little village of Kololi in Gambia. Kim and partner Lynn Joyce are now busy wrapping the hundreds of different toys/pencils/clothing/writing and colouring books plus Bat and Ball games. Both appreciate the generous response and are looking forward to seeing the children’s smiling faces. Thank you all so very much.
Congratulations to Anna Sharpe and hubby Nick

Congratulations To I think pride of place goes to Anna Sharpe and hubby Nick on the birth of their son Charley who was born on the 15th April at the Royal Surrey Hos. Weighing 6lb 5oz. Charley arrived a couple of weeks early. We have now got to act quickly and dash round their house with a Woking AC enrolment form. The reason being Hubby Nick is a very/very fast 400m athlete who is a member of Guildford AC. Maybe he could be 1st and 2nd claim to both clubs or join Guildford BUT run in Woking’s colours (or visa/versa). Charley is Anna & Nicks first child. Well done Anna/Nick hoping all three of you pay us a visit soon.
Congratulations to Rose Nicholson

Rose Nicholson by running 2.52.37 in the London marathon will go down in the clubs history books as being the very FIRST female member to run under 3 hours for a marathon. Well done Rose. Last year Jo missed it by 42 seconds.
Congratulations to Mike Bott

Club physiotherapist Mike Bott (70 on May 27th AAAHHH!) has talked and achieved many, many outstanding challenge’s in that SHORT period including still holding the clubs 0/40 marathon record of 2.29.18 since 1982 plus the club 0/55 marathon record of 2.57.55 since 1997. But his latest challenge in a K2 two man crew class with friend Adrian Clark (CANOEING) was performed over Easter starting from Devizes, Wiltshire arriving on Good Friday for a 8.30am start Sat morning. They travelled along 52 miles of the Kennett Avon Canal mastering 57 locks through the day and night then onto the Thames for 73 miles. There was pressure involved because you have to get to Teddington Lock by 8.30am Sun to take advantage of the Ebb tide, if you miss it the strength of the tide would take you back to Devizes. After Teddington there was another 20 locks before the finish at Westminster on the Sunday after 125 miles. Mike hoped to paddle for 27 hours BUT they made very good progress through the night to finish in 26 hours and 47s (5 miles per hour) or 4 knots if nautical. They finished 58th out of 156 starters of which 40 retired! And they were the oldest crew when their ages were added! Mike stated “that it was one of the hardest things I have ever done and I am just about recovered now (2nd May) but it was very rewarding knowing that we have done something good by helping the charity” This event is one of the longest races in the world and many take part in their different class canoes. Mike had 5 in a back up support team that included wife Pam and buddy Ken Saunders and they shifted from place to place with any requirements needed. Food/Chocolate/drinks. Mike raised over £1,000 for the Sam Beare Hospice. If you wish to sponsor Mike please make cheques payable to the Director of Fund Raising, Woking Hospice, Hill View Road or go on line at http://www.justgiving.com/mike-bott

Also Mary would be very surprised that her records are taking 20 or more years to break and also the first to congratulate the record breakers.

Toms Rowley's Achievement Award

Another year of watching/remembering/keeping athletes performances and it gets harder to come to a final decision. There are so many great performances in all age groups that I study so that makes it even harder. I wish I had a dozen trophies to award. This year I have awarded the trophy to Virginia Mitchell. Joining the club as a teenager Virginia almost from day one started to impress and coached by Brian Wilson improved rapidly at three/four events. Then as a senior concentrated on sprints 100/200/800/400m and regularly finishing among the medals. Then concentrated and competed more over 400m. Then tried more seriously over hurdles (mostly 400H) with great success at County/National/ and European level. Virginia entered the vet’s age group and trained just as hard and devoted a lot of time to her athletics. And with many/many first class achievements including records at World/European/National and County events winning countless Gold medals. During 2010 Virginia won three gold medals at the European Masters champ’s (400/400H/800) and in the Vets National rankings for the 2010 T&F season V is ranked 1st in 400; 1st in 400H and 3rd in 800m in the 0/45 group. Can V achieve much more? Definitely So many wonderful achievement’s in under 20 years. And although a very talented athlete still has to train/work hard to maintain the high level that V enjoys competing in. WELL DONE V.

A.G.M.& Awards

A.G.M. Club President Susan Deaves was present as ever not only to know what is happening first hand but also having a chat to members during the “Break”. Neil Henderson sailed through the agenda very efficiently. The “Any questions” were just simple inquiries that Neil answered smoothly and satisfactory. During Neil’s report he announced that Anna Krikorian has been made a Vice President and Dave Watson a life member for the many years both have served on the committee as Vice Chairman and Chairman respectively. Both worthy of their appointments. Then came “Tea Break” or in athletic language end of the first “LAP”. The “Pick & Nibble” buffet went down very well also the assortment of refreshments that was enjoyed by all. Councillor Ian Eastwood who is very interested in all sporting activities in the Woking area and has assisted our club on many occasions concerning any council business attends our AGM meetings regularly. Plus every year spends 4 or 5 hours presenting awards/medals at our YA meeting held in September. And tonight presented all the prizes. A big thank you to Ian. During the evening Craig Holder presented a new award to Barbara Houran “The Phil Holder Memorial Cup” to be awarded annually to a member who voluntary works tirelessly for the club behind the scenes over many years. The trophy was donated by a friend of Phil and Iris Holder. Phil competed and worked very hard for the club over many years and must have done every job that exists at the club. One job I remember was that he took on the role of training all young new comers. He would warm them up for ½ hour then send 4/5 to the different coaches that all willingly accepted them. Phil would train the rest. He issued them all with cards that were signed by the coaches to say the youngster had attended their particular section. This made sure each child moved around the different events. This was HARD WORK because when Iris and Phil went to Australia to compete in the World Masters T&F Champ’s and any holidays I stood in for Phil and how he handled 38 or more u/15s every week was amazing and he did it for a couple of years before The Trackers had started. The award has gone to someone in the same mould as Phil who has done everything from committee, coaching and many manual jobs. Including always asking me if we are hosting a XC meeting and if so. When? And who would be available whatever the weather. Barbara the answer to that question is that we are host club for a double Surrey Lge. fixture Men/Ladies a Lightwater in October. (Should still be warm). Barbara a very worthy winner of this award. I am sure Phil would agree with the choice of the first winner of the trophy. Nice to see Mike Goodwin at the meeting. Our last meeting was around 1995. Mike joined the club 25/30years ago and during his competitive years, like many members was always willing to do any event even jeopardising his favourite event. Mike also took over as men’s T&F team manager very successfully for 5/6 years. He then disappeared to Canada and when he returned his work kept him away from any club activities. BUT! he still has Woking AC in his blood and check’s the Cockcrow web regularly AND seeing Neil appealing for assistance in any capacity Mike’s adrenalin was on the move and has offered to take on the organising co-ordinator’s role at our YA meeting in September and with his experience/knowledge and expertise of athletics will be a great asset as leader of the meeting. I am sure we will back Mike 100% leading up to the day and also on the day itself. Mike has also rejoined the club and within weeks he will get to know you all. Welcome back Mike nice to have you on board and enjoy yourself. A very big “Thank You” to Paul and Daniela Cousins who made sure all the trophies were returned from last year’s winners and then arranged them on the stage looking very professional and impressive and all labelled in order in order of presentation. Well done Paul and Daniela. Thanks to team managers Andy Smith and Les Calder for their reports of their sections over the past season. Les very quiet during the winter but has been busy looking after and arranging U/13/11/9 Boys and Girls at the Border lge and XC relays. Well done Les. Well done Kelly/Gareth.

Rose Nicholson was ranked 49th with a time of 61.12. in the 10 mile event. This performance was achieved over the very tough Epsom 10. In the ranking there were six girls between 61.03 and 61.20. Well done Rose.

In the Wokingham ½ marathon on February.13th Ramona Thevenet Smith lowered her own 0/50 club ½ Marathon club record of 1.37.47 held since May 2010 to 1.35.51. Also In the Bramley 20 mile event on 20th February. Ramona reduced her 20 mile club record of 2.39.35 to 2.35.11. Both the 20mile records were run at Bramley 2010 and 2011.
Change of team manager

Andy Smith after five years at the helm has handed over the XC/Road team manager’s job owing to his work commitments. Andy approached Richard and Michael Baggott during the past season and both were very interested so Andy has provided them with all the necessary info. Michael and Richard soon got into the habit of raising the Woking Banner on arrival at the race venue. I am sure all the lads will assist and support in their new role. Good Luck lads. Michael and Richard have been with the club over eighteen months and both have competed on the track in the Southern Men’s Lge. And also in the Surrey XC Lge. and Road race teams. And both have had excellent performances up the sharp end.
Chairman’s Report April

I was pleased to watch our successful cross-country and road runner athletes receive their medals and trophies on Friday evening. Well done to all of you. I was a little disappointed with the turnout from the club for the AGM and awards, an important date on our club calendar. So I thought it would be worthwhile sending you my remarks from the AGM for those who missed the evening. The year has flown by and has been another good one for the Club. I’d like to congratulate all the athletes, especially where they earned league promotion for the Club or achieved particular personal success. I would personally like to thank all those willing volunteers who have helped to make the Club tick, without naming all here, but those who edit Cockcrow, manage the track, organise helpers and membership and man the gate, through to coaches and team managers who get athletes out to matches and the officials who support them. This leads me on nicely to my plea. Parents and athletes and friends of the club are all the life-blood of the Club and help to keep it running. Our club would be a much more professional Club if we had for example a Refreshments team both for home matches and club evenings. I would even consider a set-up on a paid franchise basis for setting up and manning. Extending the net wider for volunteers, I would love us to repeat the success of last years’ YOUNG ATHLETES Championships. However this is under real threat due to lack of organisers coming forward. Fortunately we do now have a possible event coordinator in the person of former athlete and friend of the Club Mike Goodwin, and we have an ongoing team working on web entries, technical, registration and officials, BUT we must fill the remaining essential roles: organisers for Refreshments (we can’t expect visitors and officials especially who have travelled a long way, not to have a cup of tea at least, not to mention our VIP guests. The other essential roles are the PROGRAMME COORDINATOR, to organise programme production, sell ad space and arrange programme sales on the day plus an EVENT PROMOTER to advertise YA with fliers at matches, local clubs and to former competitors. Details of all these critical roles have been widely publicised. Please seriously consider how you can help or if you know a friend who can, and then let me or Helen or one of the committee know if you think you can take on a role to keep our FLAGSHIP event alive. You can contact us after this evening when you like. My final remarks concern our lively and successful part of the Club, TRACKERS. This has not been put forward as an agenda item, so this is not the forum for discussion, however I think it only fair to let you know about a proposal from the Trackers leaders, Virginia & Tony Mitchell that the Committee and Board is considering, long and hard. Vi and Tony would like to take Trackers onto an independent, commercial footing, but still allied to the main Club. Their coaches and support staff for Trackers would be paid. The quality of coaching would remain as good as ever and the quality of the Trackers operation would be reinforced by introduction of the UKA assessment scheme for youngsters, and preparation of youngsters for entry to the main club and would see continuation of the Quadkids competition entry. However as this would be a radical departure from our Club’s normal operation, we cannot rush into this, and a full review of proposals is under way. The Club organisers will be putting forward its preferred form of agreement to Vi and Tony. If an agreement is then reached, then the general membership will have the opportunity to vote on the change at a general meeting. I think it is important that the change can only go forward if it has the backing of Club. I will keep you all informed in due course. I was delighted to see Life Membership being voted in for David Watson for his significant contribution to the Club as a previous Chairman and still today as web site organiser and helper at our Opens even though he now lives in Gloucestershire. Another deserved recipient of recognition is Anna Krikorian and I was very pleased that the Committee nominated her for award of Vice President, which was ratified by the AGM. Anna was a brilliant tram manager for the girls’ and women’s’ teams and a crucial member of our committee for many years. Our sincere thanks to you both.
Kim Warner wishes to thank the club and all the individuals

Kim Warner wishes to thank the club and all the individuals who kindly bought along a couple of sacks full of toys and T-shirts. He will store every single item in a special container in Exeter ready to ship out to the children of the village he sponsors in the Gambia. His next trip will be during March. Where he will waiting on the quay side when the ship arrives. One point of interest Derek Goode’s wife Fran’s daughter Lynn wraps each item in colourful wrapping paper making it like opening a present. Please don’t throw any toys/clothing away just bring them along on a training night and leave at the entrance gate and Kim will pick them up. Thank you all so much.

Some you win some you lose!
On the same day Kay Trinder broke the 0/45 ladies 5k record with a time of 20.07 the previous record of 20.44 was held by Ramona since 2007. Well done girls just keep breaking those records. It is a lot easier changing them in the record books than running them.
Congratulations

WOKING AC YOUNG ATHLETES CHAMPIONSHIPS 4TH SEPTEMBER 2011

Did YOU help out at these championships last year and have an enjoyable day?
Did your child take part in and enjoy our Young Athletes championships last September? If so, great!  You will have seen how special they are and why the future of this meeting needs to be safeguarded. This is the club’s largest event providing competition for over 450 athletes from all over the country and requiring the help of up to 100 volunteers to run the event.  Now we need new people to take on various roles in the organisation of this prestigious meeting in order for it to happen again this year.  We need to set up a team to run the meeting and without your help, IT WILL NOT HAPPEN THIS YEAR.  Please think carefully and see what you can offer the club to help.  The various roles are listed below –
Car Park Organiser – available from 8am on the day and to find and organise a rota of volunteers.
Bookings co-ordinator – to book toilets, bus, fencing, trophies/medals, t shirts etc and to organise delivery and collection before and after event.
Setting up co-ordinator – to find helpers to set up from 7am on the day and allocate jobs on the day.
Programmes – to organise programme production, sell advertising space and programme sales on the day by volunteers.
Refreshments sales to public – to organise the shopping, setting up of stall on the day from 8am, to organise a rota of volunteers on the day and to clear up at the end of the day.
Officials/Helpers refreshments –to shop,  to find and organise a team of helpers to provide refreshments from 7.30am on the day and throughout the day.
VIP refreshments – to shop, set up food and serve the VIPs during the events
BBQ – organise shopping and staffing of volunteers for lunchtime period on the day.
Event Promoter – arrange printing and distribution of fliers advertising the event at home and away fixtures and to local clubs and former competitors by e mail.
Postal entries clerk – to receive all postal entries and enter on data base.
There are also jobs available on the technical, registration and officials teams, but please think if you could head up one of the above teams
MOST IMPORTANT JOB OF ALL IS AN EVENT COORDINATOR TO HEAD UP THE TEAM
Still not sure?  Well, as an added incentive, if you take on one of the above organisational roles, your child will have FREE entry to this year’s championships.  Go on, you know it makes sense!
If you want this event to happen and would like to take on one of the roles above, please contact helenhenderson@talk21.com, 01932342799 as soon as possible as a decision has to be made on the future of this event by the end of March.   THANK YOU!
Chairman's Report

I hope you all found good ways of banishing the January blues. Fortunately a good run or other winter training and competition is a great way to be occupied as we gradually head for lighter days. The track & field season fixtures are starting to roll in; it would be great if someone could kindly take on the simple job of updating the Fixture List. It is in Publisher format, so if you have that on your PC great, if not you can borrow the Club laptop. Also in Cockrow this month is a plea for help to enable the Young Athletes Championships to take place again this year. This not a given. It would be a massive disappointment if we cannot run it due to lack of organisers but let's not be complacent about this. Good luck to all our athletes who are completing their cross- country season. We can look forward to their presentation evening which is on Friday 25th March at the New Haw Community Centre. Neil.

Club Records

Ramona Thevenet Smith broke the ladies 0/50 10mile road record with a time of 1.13.53 in the Epsom 10 held on 21st November. The previous record of 1.14.21 was held by the late Mary Todd who ran this time in the Woking 10 in 1994. This is the shortest period of time that it has taken to break one of Mary’s records and I am sure Mary would be the first to congratulate Ramona and also be surprised that the record lasted so ling.
Many of Mary’s club records that are still intact.
ROAD: 0/40 (5 mile 31.43); 0/45 (5 mile 31.56); 0/45(10k 40.40) equal with Susanna Harrison; 0/45 (marathon 3.16.22).
Track: 0/50 (800m 2.51.3); 0/45 (1500m 5.31.3) 0/50 (1500 5.34.8)
0/45 (3000 11.45.5); 0/50 (3000 5.34.8); 0/45 (5000 19.58.3); 0/50 (5000 20.32.5)
And like many of our members Mary competed in most T&F events just for the points.
Chairman's Report

Winter has well and truly arrived with the advent of the first snow of the season. This has not deterred a few hardy athletes who run in all weathers, but it's fair to say that coaching on the track is normally suspended when there is lying snow. If in doubt about your session please call your Coach. As this is the season for Cross-Country I wish the best of luck to all athletes competing this month, especially if running in the next Surrey League match.
A word of caution to all of you coming to the track; please look after your valuables. We have had a couple of incidents this week of unwanted visitors so please be on your guard.
As for Christmas track opening times, the last session will be Tuesday 21st and we'll reopen on Tuesday 4th January. Merry Christmas to all members, coaches, officials, helpers and your families.
Neil.
Congratulations To

Tom Rowley, runner-up in the Surrey Sports Awards 2010 for Outstanding Services to Sport.
Tom was presented with his award at Denbies Wine Estate on 24th November 2010, supported by club members Jenna, Ramona and Kay. The work Tom does for Working AC is immeasurable, and it's great to see his work recognised and rewarded beyond the club.

Chairman's Report

My thanks to Graham & Tom for keeping the Cock-crowing! This is the place to catch-up on news and results, whatever the season. The web-site is another place for letting everyone know what's going on and we are planning to review our site; if you know of a good host for our web-site and people who can re-style it please let me know. The Track & Field Presentation Night was well organised and presented by Craig Holder, Natasha and Andy. Well done to everyone who won a medal or trophy that night. Following our successful Young Athletes Championships we are keenly looking for fresh faces to help with organising next year's. The same few will frankly struggle to make it happen again but a few extra hands will lighten the load. Please come forward if you can help with this or one of the other important vacancies we have listed on the separate bulletin below. Good luck to all of our athletes with their winter training and cross-country competitions.
Neil.

Young Athletes Open Championship: U13 Smashes Championship Record

At an action packed YA Championships at the Sheerwater Track on 5 September, Sophie Merritt (Southampton AC) broke not one but TWO Championship records! Her discus throw of 39m04 smashed the previous U13 Girls record set in 2002 by over 8.5 m, and was followed by an excellent shot putt of 11m62, again taking the 2002 record.  These achievements earned her the title of Best Female Athlete, and a prize of some £250-00 in vouchers from our sponsor SWEATSHOP.

Kieran Showler-Davis (Basingstoke) broke the U20M 100m Championship record he set last year with a time of 10.69, and Rian McCawley (Camberley) was awarded Best Male Athlete for his magnificent U13 Boys 1500m which he won in a time of 4:53.50.  Rian also received £250-00 in vouchers from SWEATSHOP.

Best Woking AC performance (and a prize of £100-00 in vouchers) went to Jonty Mitchell for a nail-biting  U11 Boys 80m final, where even photo-finish could not split him and Jordan Russel (Sutton).  Both boys were awarded the title jointly, in a time of 11.82.

These are but some of the highlights of an excellent day’s athletics; the results are available: http://gpw.sharepointsite.com/wacpublic/admin/Entry%20Forms/WAChamps2010Results.xls .

Photographs of the day can be viewed and purchased from Simon Hart (http://www.simonhartphotography.co.uk/gallery_365822.html).

We thank Sweatshop for their generosity in supporting the event, and all the officials, helpers and athletes who combined together to make the day such a success.  We look forward to repeating the experience on 4 Sep 2011.

Chairman's Report September 2010

Chairman's Report
As you will appreciate by now I always like to accentuate the positive and so I start with the great news of Eleanor’s selection for the England Shot Put team at the Common wealth Games in October in Delhi. Isn’t it fantastic to have a Woking AC athlete in the Games, again. Let’s hope Eleanor enjoys the experience and does well. Who knows which of the youngsters who will compete at our Open Championships will progress to such a level in the sport? One of our former athletes and sprint and hurdles coach who also made it to the Games, albeit quite a few years ago, was Janet Honour, who was a great all-rounder. As you read this Janet will hopefully be recuperating well after a major hip operation so we wish her well for a speedy recovery.
We are in excellent shape for our YA Champs thanks to the work done at our annual Clear-up day by our usual, loyal, band of helpers plus the 2 new ones with their boys (they’ll know who they are)! All is neat and tidy and the hedge- cutting is worthy of Capability Brown. It all makes for an enjoyable experience for our visitors. Don’t forget it’s not too late to let me know if you can still help out on the 5th. Thanks also to all you officials and helpers who turned out to make our Evening Open such an enjoyable and successful event.
Good luck to all our athletes in their remaining league matches, including the Women in the Southern league as they strive for promotion and the Men in the British Athletic League Final and finally to all the Woking youngsters who compete next Sunday.
We also had an excellent Young Athletes Championships on Sunday 5th so a big thanks to all of the athletes and to all our helpers.
Neil.
Chairman's report August 2010

A sizzling July saw our athletes in full flow and we congratulate them all, especially our International stars Eleanor Gatrell and Virginia Mitchell who came back with Gold medals from their English and European Master Championships respectively, Virginia with 3 Golds in fact! Also well done to Jack Phipps in his English Schools Pole Vault victory. I am sure there are other great performances on field, track and road out there so apologies if I don‟t catch them all, but we are sure to read about them in Cockcrow.

A couple of diary dates, on Wednesday 4th August we had our Evening Open, a relaxed and enjoyable event for all ages. On Sunday 22nd August you are welcome to help with our Clear-up day when we put a shine on the place in readiness for our Young Athletes Open Championships on 5th September. All youngsters from 8 years to 19 are welcome to enter in this very popular event. The entries are flowing in. See website for details.

Our Track Bookings administrator, Joan Calder, has stepped down so I am looking for someone else to take over the job for next year. It involves taking schools‟ bookings for hire of the track through the Summer. Thank you to Joan; anyone interested please let me know.

A well-attended and moving send-off was given on Tuesday at the funeral of our dear friend Phil Holder. Our thoughts are especially with Iris and Phil and family at this time. Always remember to keep a smile on your face just as Phil always had when he was with us.

Chairman's Report July 2010

I'm pleased to announce that registration for this year's Young Athletes Championships on 5th September is now open! Details are on our web site. Naturally we are putting in our annual plea for helpers who are always much appreciated. Please sign up on the forms you'll see dotted around or let me know if you can help on the day if you are not already one of the team.
The Cockcrow is one of the best ways of letting you all know the latest news and after 80 editions Tom and Graham have found a better way of managing it all which will take the burden off them. As from August Alison Jackson has kindly offered to take on the editing of it using reports sent to her by team managers and members. Also thanks to Rose Nicholson who will use the content to update the web site. In due course we would like to move to a web-based magazine. I would like to thank Tom and Graham on behalf of the whole Club, for their dedicated work in producing Cockcrow over the years, but we will still look forward to reading Tom's own items that he sends in!
Great to read that former Woking and International athlete Zara Hyde-Peters, has been awarded an OBE for her services to athletics. From her days at Woking AC Zara has risen to the dizzy heights of being the Chief Executive of British Triathlon, but she still keeps in touch with her roots.
Enjoy the rest of your summer’s athletics and the holidays too.
Neil.
Club Records

Club Records: I missed one record in the previous issue.
Ramona Thevenet Smith 0/50 lowered her own 5k club record of 22.22 on the 1st May at Bushy Park by knocking off a massive 32 seconds by running 21.50. BUT! On the 26th June Ramona knocked another 5 seconds off 21.50 and ran 21.45 this being the now the 5k ladies 0/50 club record.
Two U/13 boys broke the existing 75H club record at Woking during the Wessex Lge. match on June 6th.
The record was 13.93 held by Rory Kelly since May. Andrew Lomax ran 13.80 but Rory went even better to run 13.60 now the new club record. This could also be a record of having two lowering the record on the same day in the same race. Well done lads.
Tim Page has pointed out a couple of other records that have been broken. But unfortunately I received the results too late for this issue. These will be printed in the August issue. Sorry about that Tim.
Also many thanks for the info.
Woking AC Evening Open Meeting

The Evening Open Meeting will take place on Wednesday 4th August. The timetable for the Evening Open Meeting is now available via our Entry Forms page.
Chairman's Report June 2010

Good news on the book-keeping front, we now have an able and willing newcomer in Liza Correia who has kindly offered to take on the role since Helen gave up that particular post. Her daughter Heather has joined the Club. I hope everyone will make Liza welcome. She is already one step ahead of me; asking me if was happy with the RBS situation I said the rugby was great! You can make her happy by paying up your subs, if you have not already done so. Please pass your cheque and form to Ramona as soon as you can.
I had an approach from a local company, Pattonair, who service the aerospace and defence industry and they have said they would consider applications from our young athletes for placement or internship. If you are interested, find out more on their website and let me know. Back to athletics, I found it heart-warming to see such great team-spirit at the last Women's and Men's League matches at our track. That's what the Club is about! The results were great too, as they have been at the youngster’s matches too.
Neil.
Club Records

In the London Marathon on the 25th April Jo Rodriguez broke the senior ladies marathon club record in a time of 3.00.42. The previous record was 3.01.12 held by Karen Hall since 1989.

Chairman's Report May 2010

Well, the new Track & Field season is off and running and what a great start for Woking AC. A closely-fought match for our younger athletes in the Wessex league saw them winning their first match and the Senior Women came 2nd in their opener at Watford. Well done to all involved. I hope the successes and of course the enjoyment continues. Also well done to the marathon runners, especially to that mad chap Kim who ran 3 marathons in 2 weeks! You can still put a sponsorship donation in if you want.
Turning suddenly to the end of the season and the Young Athletes Championships- vital to its success is the running of the IT behind all the on-line entries, numbering, programmes and results. We need a couple of people who have the skills to absorb this knowledge from our previous Chairman, so if you have even a basic know-how of the following (don't ask me to explain them!) please let me or one of the committee know (ASP, HTML, SharePoint, Access, Visual Basic, and ColdFusion). In my day it would have been an Excel spreadsheet!
It's a busy month ahead for the Club, including schools meetings at the track and our first home match on 15th May for which any offers of help are of course welcome. Good luck to all competing in leagues or at the Surrey Championships.
Neil.

London Marathon Draw

During the evening Andy Smith held the draw for the clubs three allotted “London” marathon places. These are available to any member who has had their original entries rejected. With only four envelopes with names on to draw from meaning one was going to be unlucky
The first three that came out was Andy Green, Ian Beston, and Adrian Brooke with Kim Warner being the unlucky one.
If any one of the lucky three has to withdraw before the 26th April (London) their entry MUST be offered to Kim or back to the club. Good luck to all three and to all our other members running London.
MABAC News

When competing in your FIRST Mabac event in 2010 you MUST have a new number and not the one you wore during 2009 or the computer could give birth. Also to assist Jenny who issues all the numbers including enrolling New Members/Juniors/Joggers. It has been suggested that the first member of any team to turn-up for his/her number please take the envelope that contains all the numbers for their team and issue them as other members of the team arrive. Like a small base camp area. This helps keep the registration table clear. Hope I have said that properly?
Club Records

Ramona Thevenet Smith ran 42.50 in the Horton Park 10k on 20th Dec to break the existing 0/50 record of 43.33 held since 1993 by Mary Todd.

To get more involved why not be the club’s secretary.
There are a small number of emails to distribute and the minutes of the club committee meeting to organise just 10 times in the year. For more information speak to Paul Cousins on 01483 600238 or email wokingac@o2.co.uk
Club Records

I was ear-wigging (I was not supposed to have heard) one evening at the track and a little group was merrily chatting away and it appears Kay Trinder has had 11(Eleven) PBs this year.
Including Road and Track. Could this be a RECORD? It certainly takes some beating.
Well done Kay. That is a great year’s performance and it comes from working hard when training and laughing. Just continue to do both.
Christmas Track Closure

THE LAST DAY of TRAINING IN 2009 at the TRACK will be TUESDAY 22nd DEC. The track will be closed DECEMBER on THURSDAY 24th --- TUESDAY 29th and THURSDAY 31st and RE-OPEN TUESDAY 5th JAN. 2010

Woking AC Membership from Ramona Thevenet-Smith Membership Secretary

This year we’ve noticed an increase in race organisers requesting competitors; (England Athletics) licence numbers on race application forms. I’ve had a few queries from members regarding this and thought I would just explain a little bit about our club membership. Terribly boring but here we go. When you join a club you pay membership fees. Here at Woking, if you’re a competing athlete, we pay England Athletics, on your behalf, an administration fee and you get, in the post (eventually) a little card with your registration or licence number on it and, amongst other things, your insurance should you ever be unfortunate enough to have an accident during competition. Pretty useful really. Below are the options of membership:
Family
A family constitutes a minimum of 1 adult and 2 children.
Senior
Over 18 years of age.

Student
18 years and under, and anyone in full-time education.
Road Runners
Plus session fee if they use the track (£3.50)
Member
For members who do not compete or use the track (e.g. social members, club officials, committee members)
So what happens if you’re no longer competing but still training? Well, there are various options open to you and much of it depends on your own personal preference and circumstances. But generally, you pay your membership, and if you’re not training every week (and you can do maths) you might find it cheaper to pay the “pay-as-you-go” fee on the gate on each training visit, having already got your basic membership (£25). However, if you think you might be slightly different just please email me with your own particular situation. But not all at once.
What if I’m injured? Sorry. But you still have to pay your subs. Unfair, I hear you cry. Tell me about it!!! We’ve all been there. It is still by far the cheapest option to keep your membership going by keeping your subs up to date. Not only that, if you’ve shelled out subs for the year, it’s a good incentive to get yourself fixed and back on track as soon as possible. And anyway, you’d miss us wouldn’t you?
So what if you no longer wish to be a member? Well and here is the boring bit of paperwork: you have to resign. In writing. And dated. Email is probably the easiest but by post is fine too, either to me or any member of the committee. If you don’t put it in writing, we won’t know (unless you’re really popular then we might notice you’re not there, eventually) and you will get subs reminders churning out for ever and a day. Save our trees? Anyway, this is actually quite important because under EA rules you are unable to compete for another club without being officially resigned from your current club. If you are looking to leave us and join another athletics club, your subs must be up-to-date before the paperwork can be released. (I’ve got the paperwork for this, again just email or call.)
I’m usually grunting and groaning round the track on a Tuesday so don’t normally have any puff for talking. But am more than happy to help with any queries you may have, either by email (running@ntlworld.com) or phone (01932 40 22 32).

Kaitin was 2nd in the 800m B string in a time of 2.23.84. Amy came 1st in the B string Shot Putt with a tremendous PB throw of 9.83 beating the winning girl in the Surrey A string. BUT another bonus is that Amy broke the existing U/13 club record of 9.36 that has stood since 1985 (14 years) held by Caroline Manning. Well done Amy and Kaitin.
Chairman’s Message

What a month July has been with so many competitions, new records, personal bests and medals galore. Tom has listed out all the results in the following pages so I will not repeat them here, but I would like to congratulate Eleanor Gatrell on leading the way with her Silver Medal in the Aviva World Trials and UK Championships in Birmingham. The first UK medal by a senior club member for many years. Well done too to all the other members of the club who have done so well this month not only as athletes but also as coaches, officials and helpers. Athletics is normally considered a solo sport, one athlete against other athletes, the clock and tape measures. In reality it is a team effort by coaches, officials, helpers and fellow athletes, training over months and years which result in supreme achievements that may only take a few minutes or seconds to execute. I think all members can and should feel proud of these achievements including those of past members of the club such as Georgia Peel who this month broke the 30 year old English Schools record for Inter Girls 1500 m by an amazing 7 seconds. Well done Team WAC.
Congratulations

Congratulations to Eleanor Gatrell gaining her first senior national medal at the UK Champ’s and World Trials held at Birmingham on 11/12th July. Eleanor was second in the Shot Putt equalling her season best with 15.56.
Club Records

Two records slipped by unnoticed as I did not know that young Anita Cryer recently had a birthday and moved up into the 0/40 group. They were both broken at the SWL held at Woking on the 30th May. In the Hammer Anita threw 26.67 previously was 24.67 held by Olia Inak Price since 1998 (11yrs).
In the Discus Anita threw 17.99 previously was 16.92 held by Sue Burridge since 1995 (14yrs).

Collom (1995) and F.Bell (1997) 14 and 12 years respectively. On 12th July at Poole Ellie threw the Javelin 23.65 beating the previous record of 22.51 held by D. Bruce since 2001.

Dave was at the meeting competing and also watching Jimmy and cheering him on in both events.
Saturday 25th July Ramona Thevenet Smith ran 20.44 at 5k Bushey Park event breaking her own 0/45 record also nearly a minute inside the club standard.
At Winchester on Sunday 26th July Thomas Buckland lowered his own U/13 boys 75H club record in a time of 14.0 previously it was 14.1.
YA Meeting on Sunday 6th Sept

Come along enjoy the atmosphere and a good day watching the YA’s competing.

Dave Nichols broke the clubs 5 mile (Road) 0/65 at Windsor on the 30th April with a time of 36.26 previous record was held by old Tom since 1996. During the race that I broke the record in 1996 the snow continued to fall during the race and I got knocked over by a snow plough and they could not find me under the 6 foot of snow for 10 minutes. Well done Dave. The only record I hold now is for lying.
Another (Road) record broken after 10 years (April 1997) was the ladies 0/40 5k held by Susan Davies.
Kay Trinder ran 19.59.95 at Bushey Park on 9th May. They all look easy until you have to run them.
Record Breaking Nichols: Most athletes try to peak for a race but Dave Nichols has been training to peak for ALL 2009 and so far succeeding. At the Vet’s T&F league meeting held at Basingstoke on May 18th Dave competed in the 800m and recorded a time of 2.51.00 so breaking the existing record of 2.57.6 held since 1992 by the worn out/shot to bits/shell shocked world war veteran (Army No.19141140) Well done Dave. Again.
Gary Bradbury broke the senior men’s 1500m record at a BMC meeting (Manchester) on 30th May running a time of 3.44.4 beating the existing 3.45.5 that has been held by Stuart Crossman since 1988 (21years). Stuart achieved his time also at a BMC meeting at Crystal Palace.
During the Vet’s league match at Portsmouth on 27th April, Linda Baldwin competed in the 2000W as usual among her other normal events. Checking the results for club records I saw Linda’s time and noticed we had no record. This I had over looked in 2008. Then I remembered Linda was in the 0/60 category last year so her 2000W time (2008) was superior to her time on 28th April 2009. So I corrected the record to read 14.50.2 from 2008. This is now the 0/60 2000W record. Sorry Linda.
I have noticed the U/13 Boys/Girls now compete in a few new events (To me) and as there are no existing records. So as to give the age group target’s to aim for I have taken the following three U/13 athletes times from the three events they have competed in during 2009 as the present club records.
IF any one in this age group has run faster in these events let me know (Boy/Girl) also Event, Time, Venue and Date.
The U/13Boys: now compete in a 75H event. Thomas Buckland ran the event in the Surrey Championships and finished in the Silver medal position with a time of 14.8 (Now Club Rec.).
The U/13 Girls: now run a 70m sprint - also a 150m sprint event(s)
Jasmine Mitchell ran the 70m event in 11.7 and Ellie Lane competed in the 150m in 21.1. Both the girls ran the above events in the NYAL at St. Albans on the 17th May. Well done Thomas/Jasmine/Ellie.
Chairman’s Message

Sally Taylorson (our new Volunteer Coordinator) started this week and has certainly hit the ground running. After a whirlwind round of meetings with club members and local volunteer organisations she has already got her sights on some new sources of volunteers. It is too early to make any formal announcements, but watch this space. Sally is also lining up some training programmes for July, one on safeguarding children (suitable for all volunteers, coaches and officials) and one on food hygiene (suitable for anyone helping with catering and refreshments). Anyone wishing to attend either of these courses or to join her volunteer force should contact Sally directly on WACVolunteer@googlemail.com
Level 1 Coaching Course

What: This Course is an introduction to coaching skills with a major emphasis on the ‘how to coach’ skills rather than the ‘what to coach’ skills. Despite this there is a large practical element with the coaching theory element of the course being taught and then put in to practice alongside technical sprint, endurance, jumping and throwing activities.
Coaches will receive a coaching manual with complete notes from the course and following completion of a CRB check through UK Athletics the coach will receive a coach pass and license (usually within eight weeks). At Level 1 a coach is qualified and insured to coach under the supervision of an athletics coach qualified to Level 2 or above.
Who can participate: Anyone aged 16+.
An assistant coach does not require athletic ability and we will also pay for your training to get a UK Athletics assistant coach qualification
When: Sunday 5th July approx 9am-5pm
Where: Ewell, Surrey

Great News - Volunteer Coordinator

I am delighted to announce that at last we have completed the selection process for our Volunteer Coordinator. Her name is Sally Taylorson and she formally starts with us on 1 June. She brings lots of experience in the voluntary sector, including recruiting and managing a team of 80 volunteers for Godalming Museum and I am sure that she will be a huge help to all of us at WAC in our efforts to increase the number of coaches, officials and helpers. Even though she does not start till 1 June she will start meeting members at the Committee Meeting on 6 May and the rest of the Club at the home match on 30 May. Please make her feel welcome and make yourself known to her, along with your suggestions as to how she can help the club to develop further, faster and higher than ever before.
If you would like to help the club in some way please let Sally know by sending her an email WACVolunteer@googlemail.com
Dave’s Run/Swim/Nosh.

This year is a special year in the Nicholls family as Dave’s son Peter is getting married. So having a busy time Dave has put the nearest date suitable for most people to get quite a gathering of runners/swimmers/walkers/sun bathers/ and pets. The DAY has changed from a Saturday to A SUNDAY. Not only because Sunday is always warmer but some people have to work on a Saturday. So for your dairy the date is SUNDAY AUGUST 16th: A reminder will be in each issue.

Achievement Award for 2007 season Eleanor Gatrell
Special Female Award “Tom Rowley Achievement Cup” Eleanor Gatrell

Eleanor has been achieving outstanding performances every year since joining the club in 1991 at the tender age of 15. Outside and indoors and has represented Surrey, London and S.of.E. Has been County SP champion many times and also in the Discus and Hammer events. Eleanor was ranked UK SP No.1 indoors last season for a couple of months. The amount of field points won in the S.W.L over the years must be an individual club record and I am sure through her dedication to her training she will continue to be an “Achiever” because she concentrates on everything she attempts.
And just lately her throwing “Vocal Chords” have even got more sweeter and into a lovely rhythm. Having been coached by Derek Goode since day one (Eleanor threw SP 6 feet) it was a PB too!
Congratulations

Congratulations to Kelly Turner and Gareth on the birth of their first child a little girl born on Sat.7th Feb. at 3.17am and weighed in at 6lb 12oz and her name is Freya Dickinson Turner. And of course “Nanny Linda” is very happy.
Congratulations to Andy Green and wife Theresa on the birth of their first child a little boy by the name of William weighing 8lb 7oz who was born at the Royal Surrey Hospital on Wednesday 25th February.
Well done to all four parents. A Woking A.C. enrolment form is in the post for William and Freya.

Chairman’s Message - Two Great Starts for 2009

Chairman’s Message - Two Great Starts for 2009

After much deliberation and consultation the Committee and Board of the Club have decided that we should employ a part time, paid Volunteer Coordinator. This is a huge step forward for the Club which until now has been operated entirely by unpaid volunteers. As many of you know it takes a team of more than 50 volunteers to run a Club like ours. These volunteers need to be recruited and managed and to do this properly takes a lot of time which no single volunteer can afford to give. So we have decided to pay someone to do it for us part time for about 12 months. We will then review the success of the scheme and decide if and how we can afford to extend it in to the future. See the “Situation Vacant” advert for details of how to apply!

The second piece of good news is truly extraordinary. The Club has received a donation of £25,000 from the friend of a Member. Len Fitzsimmonds, a friend of Ian Deaves (past Chairman of the Club), had no personal contact with the Club, but nonetheless decided to bequeath this money to the Club in his will. What extraordinary generosity. To mark this generosity we would like to ensure that this gift is properly recognised in some way and not just lost in the normal run of the mill expenditure. We are in discussions with Ian as to how he thinks his friend would like this money to be used, but we would also like to hear from you, our Members, as to how you think we should recognise this generosity. If you have any ideas please let me know (stephen.wilder@gpw.co.uk) or pass your comments to any Member of the Committee.

Stephen
Happy birthday to our Tom at 82. Contributed by Ian Todd.

Happy birthday to our Tom at 82. Contributed by Ian Todd.

January 28 was a red-letter day for the Wednesday morning running group with a record turnout at the Wyevale Garden Centre, Addlestone. It was a lovely morning for a run, but the real reason for so many happy faces was that everyone was in a party mood to congratulate Cockcrow editor Tom on his 82nd birthday and celebrate with him on the big day. Luckily the chocolate cake was big enough not only for everyone there but also for Tom to take home a piece for his ever-patient and supportive wife, Daphne. There was no inscription simply because no-one could improve upon "Tom, second to none" which was on the cake at his 80th.

As we all know, Tom is such a treasure at Woking AC and in running circles throughout Surrey, so the 28th was special. But the Wednesday and Saturday morning groups are so friendly and sociable that the birthdays of all those who turn out reasonably regularly are invariably an excuse for a celebration. A Christmas highlight was "Woking Home Guard", a brilliantly funny and well produced DVD by Barbara Appledore of Vets on the run (15 Certificate, may frighten young children). And even when there is nothing to celebrate, runs usually end with a cup of tea, hot gossip, rude jokes and lots of laughter. What's more everyone is welcome. So why not YOU!

There are a variety of routes from 4-6 miles in lovely locations within 10-20 minutes of Woking; and though most of the mid-week runners are retired, younger members of the Club who are not competing at the weekend are very welcome if they fancy a gentle jog in good company any Saturday at 8.30. The Wednesday start is 9.45. To find out where the next run is simply contact a regular runner such as Tom (01483 768491) or Dave Nichols (01932 851620). See you there!
Volunteer Coordinator Vacancy

Woking AC is a long established members’ Club dedicated to promoting the enjoyment of and participation in competitive athletics (track, field, road and cross country). It is open to all and has a growing membership (300 and rising) ranging in age from 8 to 80. It is currently run entirely by a group of dedicated, enthusiastic volunteers who are finding it increasingly difficult to give enough time to develop the Club and its athletes in the manner they would like. The Club has therefore taken the decision to recruit and pay a part time Volunteer Coordinator, who will work with the Club Chairman over the next 12 months, to enhance the overall management of the Club. At the end of this period the Club will review progress and decide if and how the role will be extended in to the future.
MAIN DUTIES To liaise with the Chairman to ensure that all tasks required to run the Club are suitably allocated and carried out efficiently. To supervise and oversee all volunteers. To coordinate the implementation of the volunteer recruitment, training and support plans. To ensure that all jobs have a job description. To recognise and nominate volunteers for the numerous volunteer awards. To act as the main contact for all volunteers. To ensure all volunteer paperwork is completed satisfactorily. To organise social and recruitment events for volunteers.
SKILLS REQUIRED: Have great organisation skills and be able to delegate duties. An enthusiastic and good motivator. An approachable and good listener. A confident and effective communicator.
RESPONSIBLE TO: Club Committee
Remuneration a Term Contract: Full time equivalent £20,000 pa Time commitment required will be part time – hours and term to be agreed with successful candidate Anyone wishing to apply should send their CV to:
Stephen Wilder, 3 Redcourt, Woking, Surrey, GU22 8RA or email stephen.wilder@gpw.co.uk
Closing date for applications 21 February 2009
Track is OPEN for Training 9 Feb 2009

Many of you will be pleased to hear that the track is open for Trackers' training again for tonight 9 Feb.
Chairman's Message

Happy New Year
With all the gloom and doom around in the economy and everyday life it is very easy to go with the flow and join in with the commiserations. But this is the time when true athletes demonstrate their competitive edge and determination to overcome all obstacles whether they be an excess of Christmas puddings or more serious problems. 2009 is undoubtedly going to be a tough year for us all in some way or other, but with a combination of hard work, determination, adaptation and team work we can all emerge stronger and fitter. Keep up the good work, get fit, stay fit, have fun and have a great year’s athletics.

YA 2008 breaks even more records - 12 this year

This year's Young Athletes' Open Championship has broken even more records.  The performances were hot even though the weather was cold - on the field 5 new records were set:
  • Under 13 Boys High Jump - Nicholas Hunt (Bournemouth AC) cleared 1.63m breaking a 1.60m record that has stood since 1982.
  • Under 13 Boys Javelin - Matthew Blandford (Ashford AC) threw 44.56m breaking a 1 year old record of 41.31m.
  • Under 15 Girls Javelin - Makeda Lewis (Ealing, Southall and Middlesex AC) threw 37.35m breaking a 4 year old record of 35.80m.
  • Under 13 Girls Shot - Natalie Whisken (Bournemouth AC) put 9.08m breaking a 12 year old record set at 8.92m.
  • Under 20 Women Pole Vault - Sophie Upton (Team Bath AC) cleared 3.50m breaking a 10 year old record of 3.10m.

Things were no less hectic on the track with 7 new records:

  • Under 17 Men 200m - Kieran Showler-Davis (Winchester & District AC) ran a superbe 21.54secs breaking his own record he set last year.
  • Under 17 Men 100m - Again Kieran Shower-Davis (Winchester & District AC) ran a blistering 10.60sec breaking his own record he set last year - 2 records in each of 2 years must be a record in itself!
  • Under 11 Girls 80m - Simi Fajemisin (Oxford City AC) ran 11.27 secs breaking a 5 year old record.
  • Under 17 Men 1500m - Jonathan Hay (Aldershot Farnham and District AC) ran 4:02.49 secs breaking a 4 year old record.
  • Under 15 Girls 100m - Jodie Williams (Herts Phoenix AC) ran 11.99 secs breaking her own 1 year old record.
  • Under 13 Girls 100m - Lukesha Morris (Reading AC) ran 12.81 secs breaking a 22 year old record.
  • Under 15 Boys 1500m - Jordan Maurice (Croydon Harriers) ran 4:18.91 secs breaking a 27 year old record!
Well done to all our record breakers - let's hope the momentum continues well in to 2012 and beyond.
YA 2008 Congratulations

The winners of this year's YA Open Championship Sweatshop Kit Scholarship give substance to the idea that athletics in the UK is very much alive.

Best Performance on the Track goes to Kieran Showler-Davis (Winchester and District AC) for his blistering 10.60 sec performance in the Under 17 Men 100m which apart from being a PB ranks him a clear (non wind assisted!) number 2 in the UK this year just 0.02secs behind the number 1.

Best Performance on the Field goes to Nicholas Hunt (Bournemouth AC) who cleared an amazing 1.63m in the Under 13 Boys High Jump and in the process broke a 1.60m Championship Record set in 1982.  His performance was 2cm off his PB, but still ranks as the 3rd best performance in the UK this year.

Best Performance by a Woking Athlete goes to Georgia Peel for her winning time of 4:42.03 sec in the Under 15 Girls 1500m - a performance ranking 13th best in the UK this year.

Congratulations to them all for achieving such high performances despite an unusually cold and wet day and thank you to Sweatshop for supporting these athletes in this way.
Club Records

Daniel Johnson U/11 broke the 600m club record for his age group at the Woking YA
Meeting with a time of 1.56.21. It was previously held by Alexander Peel since 2002 with a time of 1.56.86. Georgia Peel U/15 created a 3000m record at Twickenham on 14th Sept. This is a new record as no other U/15 girl has ran the event before (To my Knowledge) and looking back over the past records since 1980 I have not found one.
2008 Track & Field Presentations Awards Plus A.G.M

Life Membership of Runnymede Runners for Tom Rowley.

Tom was to modest to put this in himself but he was given Life Membership of Runnymede Runners at the last 5 mile event on August 28th. We have been unable to think of the reason for this generous gesture but we all hope that he gets lots of year’s use of it. It couldn’t have been given to a nicer person!
Club Records.

Record breaking number of records broken

Athletes from Ipswich to Bath converged on Woking for this year's Young Athletes' Open Championship, jointly sponsored by the News and Mail and Sweatshop Woking.  The meeting produced the highest quality of events in the meeting’s history highlighting the growing reputation that this meeting is one of the top young athletes competitions in the country.  An amazing 19 Championship records were broken, one by a Woking athlete, a couple of which had been held for over twenty years.  There were several other performances that put athletes high up in the UK national rankings.  Over half of these records came in the sprints with the rest being spread around the middle distance and field events.

For full details of all the results plus comments check out the section on Young Athletes.
The helper were out in numbers too

This meeting again showed the hard work put in by many members of Woking AC before, during and after these championships with many hours given up voluntarily to help make the whole day run so smoothly.  More than 120 people were involved in one way or another in helping out either on the day or in the months leading up to it.  The Club owes a huge debt of gratitude to each and every one of these without which these Championships would never happen.

London 2012 here we come!

Great news. We have just been informed that we have been selected as a Pre-Games Training Camp for the London 2012 Olympics. This means that details of our club will be circulated to all the National teams competing in the London 2012 Olympics offering them a venue for their athletes to train and acclimatise prior to the main games. To get this far is an honour, not all clubs who offer their facilities get this far. It will be some time before we know which country chooses our venue, but we will keep you informed of progress. In the meantime if you have any suggestions as to how we should celebrate this event and/or how we should use this event to promote athletics in the Woking area please let me know.

A New Clubhouse?

The Committee and Board of the Club have agreed that we should investigate the feasibility of building our own Clubhouse at the Sheerwater Track. I am sure that we are all aware of the many shortcomings of the current pavilion and would like to have something better suited to our needs! The first stage in this process is to determine what we want from such a Clubhouse and who better to ask than you, the Members of the Club. To that end we are going to hold an Open Meeting (of the sitting down variety) for all Members, officials, team managers, athletes, coaches and helpers of all kinds to hear your views as to what you want from a new Clubhouse. This Open Meeting is scheduled for 8:00pm on Thursday 24 July in the pavilion at the track. So whatever your interest in the Club or whatever your discipline track, field, road or cross country please take a few minutes to come along and tell us what you think should be included in our new Clubhouse and indeed whether you think we should have one.
Congratulations to Eleanor Gatrell

Congratulations to Eleanor Gatrell winning the South of England Shot Put title at Crystal Palace with a throw of 15.96 breaking her own Club Record of 15.86 by 10cm in the process. Well done Eleanor.
Eleanor is now ranked No2 in the UK and is hoping clear 16.00 at the National Champ’s incorporating the Olympic trails at Birmingham July 11/12/13th.
Best wishes

Best Wishes to Nicky Eglington and Gordon on their wedding day at the end of June. And seems as though it will be a nice romantic ceremony because it is going to take place at a small mountain church in the village called Golzern (Switzerland) where Vreny’s mother was born. Nicky’s parents are taking the wedding dress by car (BA might loose it). Then on the day Nicky will ascend the mountain in a Cable car wearing her wedding dress then when they reach the end of the line Vicky will then walk ½ mile to the church in a pair of PINK Training shoes (Nike). Enjoy your wonderful experience and from all the members our very best wishes to you both.

Female Special Award: “Tom Rowley Achievement Cup” to Natisha Hart

This is a new award donated to the club by my Wembley school day friends who were present at my 80th Birthday party and wish it to be called “The Tom Rowley Award.” I thought about it and decided it would be for ALL ages in the women’s section Track/Field/Indoor/XC/Road over a year from April. For the best ACHEIVEMENT not necessarily having to win. Since knowing about this donation I have watched all the results and performances and to choose a winner is tough. It would have been easier to find an apple without a core. But after loosing Sleep/Weight/Hair and the Lottery, I managed to decide on the winner. From the U/13s through to the Vet’s and from a short list of 20 the winner by ½ a point over the other 19 was Natasha Hart, for mastering the run-up with the weight of the Pole and the POLE technique of planting/doing a handstand at the top plus co-ordination of twisting over the bar is a wonderful achievement and Natasha continuing to have few PBs outdoors/indoors, not always winning the event but in there trying. A worthy winner. Well done Natasha.
I shall in the next 12 months continue to watch the other 19 runner-ups plus many others.
My list included: Eleanor Gatrell; Vicky Hewitt; Nicky Eglington; Georgia Peel; Jo Rodriguez Downs; Susanna Harrison; Sarah Vaughan; Claire Nichols; Ann Sprigings; Ramona Thevenet Smith; Iris Holder; Bel Levene; Sarah Holmes; Eleanor Harrison; Helena Corbin; Fiona Bishop; Helena Corbin; Jess Lakin; Lucy Morris. All these and a few others who have had PBs and have also achieved something during the past 12months and hope they continue. So you can see the problem my school mates have let me in for every year until?

Club Records

Nick Phipps 0/55 broke his own (Indoor) Pole Vault record at Lee Valley on the 24th Feb. with a vault of 3.30 to win a Gold at the British Masters Champ’s (National Champ). Previous record was 3.20.
Nick’s U/15 year old son Jack Phipps Vaulted 2.80 at the Surrey Indoor Championships coming 1st and it was a CBP. (Our first indoor U/15 boys club record).
Also at the same Champ’s Natasha Hart equalled her Pole Vault club record of 2.90 and also winning the competition. Two Surrey Indoor PV Champions.
Ian Tullet who coaches Sam Colgate/Jack Phipps and Natasha must be pleased with their winter indoor performances after their hard pre- Christmas training and that his time was not wasted. Well done Ian.
Jack Dewhurst U/17 competed in the Long Jump and the Triple Jump. As no results have come along I am waiting to see Jack because these are NEW Club records by a U/17 Boy what ever distance he jumped. And a great feeling of satisfaction for Barbara Hourhan who also spends many hours in the cold dark nights coaching her LJ/TJ squad.

Road record: Ann Sprigings 0/60 broke her own 10 mile record by two minutes at the Maidenhead 10 on Good Friday with a time of 1.22.04 (Was 24.04).
Corrections

A double error in the award list printed in the April issue, Jenna Tarrant was Bronze medal winner in the XC section NOT as printed for Road. Becky Baldwin was Bronze medal winner in the road section NOT as printed for XC. Apologies to Becky and Jenna and although they are not the worrying type it is nice to get things right.
Another mistake I (WE) married Derek Goode and Francis a week earlier it should have been the April 26th April NOT the 19th very sorry to Derek and Fran although again they are not worriers and pleased to say the wedding was a great success. If ever you notice any mistakes in the Cockcrow please tell me as it is no problem to correct them.
Congratulations to Ramona Thevenet Smith

Congratulations to Ramona Thevenet Smith who has been selected to run as a member of the English Ultra Distance team on 11th May over 100K (62.5 Mile). This selection is well deserved after a very good year running Ultra events including breaking the Meander 54 mile course record by 30 minutes also beating the top international 100K female runner for the last 11 years. Good Luck Ramona. (Get mum’s cake recipe out Ramona).

The Christmas run from Newlands Corner on the 15th

The Christmas run from Newlands Corner on the 15th saw 40 plus turn out in the bitter cold and very windy at the top of hill so as soon as they started off all headed for the shielded wooded areas. Wimps! There was no shortage of goodies spread out on picnic tables after the run that was bought along plus Tea/Coffee or a nice warm glass of PUNCH courtesy of Susan Davies. All of Jo/Rod’s “Special” Chocolate/Banana cake went in club record time. Jo said it was Spanish Bread Pudding but whatever it is it went too quick so Jo has promised a three tier one next year. Susanna asked me to keep an eye on Robert/Eleanor but I couldn’t find them. I found out after wards they ran the whole way with the big group. Peter Collins dog just beat him to the top of hill but Peter beat his dog to the Sausage rolls. Ian Todd landed from Australia at 1.30am and still got there on time and RAN. Ian paid a visit to Ray Taylor for a couple of days while in OZ visiting friends. Ray wife Margaret and daughter Lynn and family are all keeping well. Also present was our very successful men’s senior squad team members using this as a training run as well as socialising. Well done lads. The walking group survived for 45 minutes unable to keep up with Ralph Henley who is on his “Come back schedule”. When the SUN went down at 9.30 AM it started to get colder so after one or two cuddles we all went home.

Another great day for YA

The 2007 Young Athletes' Open Championship produced another great day's athletics.  Several Championship records were broken and there were many fiercely fought competitions.

Outstanding performances by Jodie Williams (12.01 in the Under 15 girls 100m) from Herts Phoenix, Adam Moore (1:56.15 in the Under 17 Men 800m) from Bracknell AC and Tim Kuria (49.52 in the Under 20 Men 400m) from Woking AC resulted in each of them winning a Sweatshop Kit Scholarship.

We are checking the results from all the events and compiling them for the website along with the hundreds of photographs taken on the day.  It will take a day or two to get them all sorted, but we will let you know as soon as they are all ready.  So watch this space!

In the Field

There were two medals gained in the field events by Woking athletes with Milan Stanisaljevic just Under his personal best in winning the Under 20 high jump with a fine leap of 1.85 metres whilst Moses Kuria, Tim’s brother was second in the Under 20 discus. There were other fine performances from Jack Wilkinson in the Under 15 high jump where he cleared 1.60 for fifth place whilst Georgina Akers occupied the same position in the Under 15 girls Shot Putt.

Under 11 were busy

There were also a high number of Under 11 athletes competing for Woking’s young section of the club called Trackers who train on Monday night trying out many different events at the Sheerwater track, many in what was their first ever competition and thus gaining great experience for the future.  Amongst those competing in the 80 metres, 600 metres and long jump were Claire Skinner, Nicole Davis, Jasmine Mitchell, Georgia Wright, Jonty Mitchell, Daniel Johnson, Ryan Saunders and Thomas Buckland who finished 6th in the 80 metres and then 5th out of 25 in the long jump which was a magnificent effort.

Headline for YA section

This year's Young Athletes Open Championship, jointly sponsored by the News and Mail and Sweatshop Woking, produced the highest quality of events in the meeting’s history highlighting the growing reputation that this meeting is one of the top young athletes competitions in the country. It now attracts some of the top ranked youngsters from around the country with athletes from as far away as Ipswich and Bath travelling to take part.  An amazing 19 Championship records were broken, one by a Woking athlete,  a couple of which had been held for over twenty years.  There were several other performances that put people high up in the UK national rankings. Over half of these records came in the sprints with the rest being spread around the middle distance and field events.

With there being so many Championship records broken there was tight competition for the scholarship kit awards on offer from Sweatshop, but the eventual overall winners of these were Jodie Williams from Herts Phoenix who ran an amazingly quick 12.10 in the Under 15 girls 100 metres and Adam Moore in the Under 17 men 800 metres who won in a very classy time of 1 minute 56.15 seconds.  Sweatshop also gave out an award for the best performance by a Woking athlete and this came from Tim Kuria in the penultimate event of the day, the Under 20 400m.  Tim completely dominated the opposition to win in a new personal best time, and Championship record of 49.52 seconds. He also broke the Under 20 club record from current team mate Andy Watson.  Earlier in the day Tim had also picked up a bronze medal in the 200 metres, where the two athletes in front of him broke the previous Championship record.

In the female sprints there were more fine performances from Woking athletes. In the Under 20 200m Jess Lakin was a fine second in 27.75 seconds with Vicki Hewitt occupying the same position in the Under 17 200m.  Earlier in the day Vicki was an impressively comfortable winner in the 300m in a time of 41.53 seconds. Whilst in the 400 metres Helena Corbin won the gold medal in 61.41 seconds.  In the shorter 100 metre event, for the Under 17 women, Woking picked up another medal with Georgia Vardy having very good runs in both the heat and the final to finish in third place in a time of 13.23 seconds whilst Helen Parsons also produced two fine runs in making the final and finishing eighth in 13.70 seconds. In the Under 13 girls sprints there were two Woking athletes who made it to the final of the 200 metres. Gemma Williams ran a fine race to finish in third place in a time of 29.02 seconds, whilst Faith Bavington Hall was just outside the medals but still ran a fine race to finish in fifth place in 30.01 seconds. Earlier Gemma had just missed a medal in the 100 metres by finishing fourth in 14.34 seconds whilst Faith had just missed out on reaching the final in recording a time of 14.57 seconds.

In the middle distance events Gary Bradbury was the star Woking athlete on show and showed his class in the Under 20 1500 metres where he had a very comfortable win in recording a time of 4 minutes 3.29 seconds.  In the Under 17 equivalent Richard Calder had a good run to finish in third place in 4 minutes 30.23 whilst Paul Wells was just outside his best in the same age group for the 800 metres.  In the Under 15 girls 800 metres there were two Woking athletes in the top five with Lucy Morris a fine 2nd in 2 minutes 31.12 whilst Amelia Rosenberg was 5th in 2 minutes 42.45 seconds. In the Under 15 boys Zak Curran was 8th in 2 minutes 16.16.

Name from the Past?

on April 24th 2006, Tom Rowley received an email from Stephen Chard, a previous member of Woking AC.  It read "I came across the Woking A.C. website by chance and it brought back many happy memories.  Memories going back to the grass track opposite The Wheatsheaf in Chobham Road and later the cinder track at Sheerwater.  Do you ever see any of the "old" gang any more?  Do you remember the committee meetings at the vinalls flat?  If you have time, let me know how you and anyone else I may know are."  Stephen Chard is the current club record holder for the U20 men at 100 and 200 metres.  He set these records in 1964!  If anyone remembers Stephen and would like to get in contact/find out how he's doing, please see Tom for more info.
Woking AC athlete raises over £17,000 for local hospice

Woking athlete Mark Gillett has raised over £17,000 for Woking hospice, by successfully completing the Marathon Des Sables and covering a total of 220K over 8 days (6 days spent running: 28k, 35k, 38k, 72k, 42k and 12k) across the Sahara Desert.  Out of 585 finishers, Mark came in at 178th and 26th Brit (32 countries were represented).  Making this achievement even more remarkable is the fact that 146 people, out of the original 731 competitors, had to pull out due to extreme weather conditions.  For Marks full race report, visit: www.junglemoon.co.uk/mdsaccount.  Pictures that Mark took during Marathon can be viewed at: www.junglemoon.co.uk/mds.

Vaulting to Victory

Congratulations to Tony Hillier from Bristol & West AC on winning the Sweatshop Kit Scholarship at this year's Young Athletes' Open Championship for the Best Performance of the Day.  His vault of 3.80m as an Under 15 Boy was 20cm higher than any other Under 15 Boy this year, although not a PB by his standards it did impress the judges enormously and it still leaves him ranked as No 1 in the UK this year.

In fact Sweatshop management were so impressed by the overall quality of the performances that they extended their scholarship to 2 consolation offerings one for the Best Track Performance and one for the Best Field Performance.  Holly Croxford from Winchester and District AC won the Track Scholarship with a fabulous 39.61 sec in the Under 17 Women 300m.  It was a PB and ranks her 7th in the UK this year.  Daniel Pembridge from WSEH won the Under 15 Javelin with a throw of 52.25m ranking him second in the UK this year.

A big "thank you" too to Woking Sweatshop for such generous support to their local club.

A full list of all the results is being prepared and will be on this website as soon as possible.

For a summary of the performances see the Young Athletes News section - menu on the left.
Officials and Helpers set new records too!

A record 120 Officials and Helpers were on duty at this year's Young Athletes Open Championship.  Mums, Dads, Grandparents, experienced officials and even some of the young athletes themselves helped to make this such a successful event not only on the day but in the weeks and months beforehand.  Some of the younger members were serving drinks one minute and running "eye balls out" the next.  Another group welcomed visitors to the car park with a disco dance routine to the tune of "Come on, Come on..." before racing off to do the 1500m !

A great day was had by all and Woking AC Committee would like say a HUGE "thank you" to everyone for all their much appreciated efforts.  A great demonstration of what volunteers can do in this "The Year of the Volunteer".

We have had a bumper entry for this year's Young Athletes Open Championship.  Nearly 600 athletes have signed up.  Indeed the entry is so large that we are having to rework the timetable and extend the hours of competition!  All entrants will receive personalised copies of the timetable, registration process and joining instructions via email and regular mail during this Bank Holiday weekend.  Anyone who thinks that they have entered and has not received their personalised timetable by close of play on 31 August 2005 should send an email to YA2005@gpw.co.uk giving their full contact details and explaining their concerns.
Eleanor Gatrell 7th in Olympic Trials

Congratulations to Eleanor Gatrell on coming 7th in the Women's Shot in the GB Olympic Trials and AAA National Championships in Manchester last weekend.  At 13.87m not a PB but still a fine performance.
Nick makes it to the World Junior Championships

As a result of his 2.15m high jump (see below) Nick has been selected for the GB team in the IAAF World Junior Championships which start this week in Grosseto, Italy.  Well done Nick, keep on jumping!!
Home Team wins!

Woking AC athletes storm home in this year's Woking 10.   Suzanna Harrison and Joanne Rodrigez Dow of Woking AC were the first two women home and Mike Waine of Woking AC was second in the men's event behind Andrew Hunt of Cardiff AC.

The Team competitions were won by Vale of Aylesbury AC (Richard Taylor, Colin Steptoe and Henry Edwardes-Evans) and Woking AC (Suzanna, Joanne and Janice Warren) in the women's team event.

Full results are now on the website - just minutes after the last person crossed the line.
Congratulations!!!!

There were some exceptional performances from some of Woking AC's athletes at the English Schools Track and Field Championships in Birmingham 8-9th July.

In the Junior boys age group there were sound performances by Martin Cousins and Rob Hunt.  Both did very well in making their respective finals in the 800 and 200m.

After doing the hard bit and making the final, Martin finished 7th in his 800m in 2:04.22.
Rob, on the other hand ran the race of his life to finish 3rd in the 200m in a lifetime best of 22.55 seconds.

There were also some superb feats in the Inter boys age group. Woking was represented by 2 athletes, Tim Kuria and Gary Bradbury.
After getting through a tricky opening heat and semi final in 50.60 and 50.32, Tim pulled out another amazing performance to finish 5th from lane 8 in a huge personal best and club record of 49.78.
In the 1500, Gary easily negotiated his heat by winning in 4:00.18. Come the final, Gary turned it on and won in a new personal best and club record of 3:56.76.

Our sole representative in the Senior boys age group was Nick Webb in the discus.  It was a close competition and he ended up victorious with a throw of 45.76m.

Congratulations guys from everyone at Woking AC.

Nick Stanisavljevic has a very successful Commonwealth Youth Games!

At the recent Commonwealth Youth Games, held in Melbourne, Australia England sent a squad of athletes aged between 16 and 18 years old to compete for the youth equivalent of the Commonwealth Games.

Woking AC's Nick Stanisavljevic was selected to compete in the high jump. This topped off a highly successful season where was also selected to represent Great Britain at the World Junior championships in Grosetto, Italy.

After a lengthy competition Nick eventually finished second with a jump of 2.10 to an impressive leap of 2.13 by an Indian called Harishankar Roy. Certainly 2 names to look out for in the future. Well done Nick!
Nick Stanisavljevic finishes 9th in WJ final

After qualifying for the World Junior Championships at the National Championships in Bedford, Nick was selected for the GB Junior team to go to Grossetto.

In his qualifying pool, he equalled his PB of 2.15 to qualify for the final.  Once making the final he had a solid competition, clearing 2.02 first time, then too 3 attempts at 2.10, cleared 2.14 first time and then bowed at what would have been a new personal best height of 2.18.

Not a bad effort considering he gets another go at the European Junior Championships in Kaunas, Lithuania next season!
Well done Nick!!!
What a scorcher!

Today's Young Athletes Open Championship has been hot all round - several Championship records were broken and there was not a cloud in the sky all day.

All the results for the day are now on the site - so please please browse around the "Young Athletes" section and compare your results with those of your friends and foes a like!

Looking for the next Kelly Holmes?

Over 550 aspiring young Kellys are now warming up for some hot competition on the 5th September.  How many will triumph in the Beijing Olympics?  Some of them have already made appearances in the World Junior Championships.  Come along and spot the rising talent for 2008 and 2012.
YA Open Championship is hotting up!

Competition at this year's YA Open Championship here on Sunday 5 September is certain to be hot.  Nick Stanisavljevic (U20) is leading the way looking to top his PB of 2m15 in the High Jump.  Marimba Odundo-Mendez (U20) wants to better his PBs of 10.8 in the 100m and 21.7 in the 200m.  And that is just for starters.

Elsewhere in the meeting old scores will undoubtedly be settled with re-runs of the English Schools finals.  With 1 week still to go before the closing date for entries there are already over 120 athletes with PBs exceeding the Grade 1 standard for their events.

Are you up to the challenge?  The meeting is Open to anyone between the ages of 9 and 19 from anywhere in the world whether you are a member of a club or not, so give it a go.  Click on the Entry Forms item on the left for copies of the Entry Form - the closing date for entries is 24 August so don't delay fill one in today.
Congratulations Nick Stanisavljevic!!!!!

On Saturday 28th June, Nick competed in the U20 AAA Championships in Bedford.  After major traffic problems on the M1 and the A6 leading to the stadium, he ended up getting to the stadium almost halfway through the competition.

He entered the competition at 1.96 and cleared it first time with no warm up, he then had first time clearances at 2.01 and 2.06, two attempts at 2.09, followed by first time clearances at 2.12 and 2.15.  The final jump won him the competition, and guaranteed his selection for the World Junior Championships in Grosetto on 12-18 July.

To make matters worse, the weather was not conducive to high jumping with strong winds and heavy rain making life very difficult for all of the competitors.  Looks like Woking AC have a class act of the future!

From everybody at Woking Athletic Club, well done Nick!
YA contender on the up!

Marimba Odundo-Mendez from Winchester won the Senior Boys 200m final in 21.65 seconds at the English Schools last week, ahead of Paul Judson from Nottinghamshire. Marimba then travelled to the AAA and Olympic Trials on Sunday, where he finished a respectable fifth in his heat in 21.94, behind Darren Campbell and Marlon Devonish, ten years his senior.

Come along and watch Marimba at the Woking AC Young Athletes Open Championship on 5 September, or compete against him if you wish...!  The Entry Forms are only a click away. (See panel on the left)

Cannon's Join the Team

We are delighted to announce that Cannon's have agreed to be one of this year's major sponsors for the Young Athletes Open Championship.
Encouraging start to the new track season by both seniors and youngsters

There has been an encouraging start by all track teams in the first four matches of the new season.

There was a solid start by the juniors who competed in the first Wessex League.  This is a new league, which includes all age groups up to under 17 men and women.  In very difficult conditions at Southampton on 18th April, the team managed a very creditable 2nd place overall.  The following week at the home fixture, the woking teams dominated.

The women were expecting a harder day of it at their first track fixture of the season.  There were some very heartening performances from the ladies, most notably in the field.  The performaces by the senior women were backed up by the under 15's, which piled on the points for the team.  They went on to win the match convincingly.  Not bad considering they were only promoted to division 2 this year!!

The men's team also had their first fixture recently in the Southern Men's League division 1.  In a competitive match, there were some solid displays in both the track and the field.  The most notable performances were in the distance events-a very unusual feat for the men's team!!  After some sound performances from the whole team, the men went on to finish a promosing 2nd place.
Excellent start by youngsters in first NYAL of the season

There was an excellent start by the youngsters who were involved at the first National Young Athlete's League at Sutton.

There were some very encouraging displays in both the track and the field from some of the younger members of the team.  Due to the excellent team spirit, there were very few gaps throughout the day which meant that the Woking team scored points no matter how many or how few.

The U13 boys had a successful day scoring 53 points out of a possible 96.  There weren't many victories, but due to the lack of gaps in the team they picked up points where other teams dropped them.

The U15 boys continued the trend by picking up 95points out of a possible 208.  This is an incredible effort considering the size of the team.  There were some very promising performances from this age group, most naotably from Michael Crabtree, who ran a new PB in his first 400 of the seaason.

There were also some dominant displays from the U17 men.  They scored 148 out of a possible 240.  The highest points scorer on the day was Nick Webb with some very dominant throwing.

The U13 girls also had a solid day by scoring 85 out of a possible 128.  The consistency of perfomance throught the day was promising for the upcoming matches.

The U15 girls also had a good day.  There was some good scoring from the whole team.  There were some promising performances from the athletes on the track and in the field.

The U17 women also scored consistently throghout the day scoring 83 out of a possible 208, another good perfomrance from a very small team.

These age group performances resulted in an impressive 675 overall points score.  This won the match by a massive 148pts.  Very encouraging guys and girls, keep it up!!

Trackers

The last Trackers evening will be 22 March - there will then be a two week break before the start of the track season.
Road Works stop Road Race

Just days before the Woking TenTen Surrey County Council and Transco announce that part of the course for the Woking TenTen will be closed to traffic on Sunday 4 April - the date of Woking AC's premier 10 mile and 10k road runs.  Naturally all entry fees will be refunded in full.  Major efforts are now under way to ensure that all entrants are informed.

Dave Watson, Chairman of Woking AC said "It is with much regret that we have taken the decision to cancel this year's run.  We felt that the repurcussions of having such a major road closure not only on the course, but also on a major route to and from the start and finish areas would result in major confusion, delays and frustrations for all concerned.  To all those would be TenTen entrants we say please accept our apologies, unfortunately these road works are beyond our control.  In the meantime we look forward to seeing you next year for a Road Works free Road Run."
AGM

Please make a note in your diary for the AGM and Cross Country presentation evening on 2 April at 7:00pm in the Sheerwater Community Centre.
Ooops!

Many apologies, but there was an error in the first version of the Ten Ten entry form the start time for the 10k is 09:40 NOT 10:40 as per the original entry form.  The current version of the entry form has the correct start time....
Trackers Cancelled

Not surprisingly the Trackers' Session tonight Monday 2 Feb 2009 has been cancelled due to the snow!  The track has disappeared under 15cm of snow.  Watch this space for updates.
