News and views from the world of road running!
| | | | | | Windlesham 10K H/C 29th AprilIt rained from dawn to dusk. The ducks are fed-up with the rain and the flowers but the weeds love it. I hope the hosepipes fill up pretty soon.
Today those that braved the weather were Laura Hales running 42.02 a week after running a London PB of 3.09.52. Today Laura was accompanying her two 0/60 training partners Keith Hull 42.09 and Geoff Williams 42.51, then 0/70 John Coffey ran 50.38 and Mark Coxhead 53.06. Malcolm Vaughan got the wettest by being out in the rain for 53.52.
All got under the club standard.
Well done every one.
Runnymede Runners 5Mile H/C Thurs. 26th April Freezing cold strong wind for the first of the series of five. We had 10 on parade some trying out injuries,
some recovering from London and some really going well. All running off 2011s H/C time so I will put
them in fastest order. Jimmy Brown and Richard Baggott did not register just jogged around and had no h/c time and no finish time recorded.
Their fastest time in 2011 is in Brackets.
Fastest Times Today: Gilbert Grundy 27.15, Michael Baggott 32.04 (29.42), Dave Nichols 39.07 (37.03),
Susanne Barnes 39.46(38.30), Christine Flynn 39.51(39.39), John Coffey 39.50 (36.39) and Malcolm Vaughan 43.52 (45.45). Christine, Dave and John all achieved club standard.
Portsmouth 5k Series of 3 April 25th.I am sure if there is an event in Hampshire they personally invite Kay Trinder AND if Kay was not available they would cancel it. Bread and born in the county and whose parents still live there. Kay always comes back with an award and must have special Hampshire trophy cabinet full of awards/medals/prizes. Well done Kay.
And I would not be surprised if they give her an award before the off. Kay enjoys running on the roads
She played on in her school days. Today Kay finished 1st 0/45 3rd lady and 9th o/a in 19.37 just 20 seconds outside her best. But well inside the 0/45 club standard of 21.46.
Allan Davidson 0/60 also ran and finished 84th in 23.52.
London Marathon 22nd April. The rain that was forecast did not show-up until Monday.
The weather was good for running and spectators too. All our members looked in good shape at the 10k mark and came past in this order. Justin Mitchell, Jason Harris, Phil Cross, Paul Dennis and then flying along were Laura Hales, Ramona Thevenet, then over minute behind Jaydee Hunt, Miche Oldham, Kim Warner, Michael Baggott, Adrian Brookes and Mike Warner.
Adrian Brookes was in a Woking Hospice Green sponsors vest so I missed him as there were so many.
And those that heard and saw me waved back smiling (I must have a funny face!).
Unfortunately I did not take their split times as I was busy clapping. I train 4 hours a day clapping.
I witnessed the Elite Kenyan women Zooming past who were running for Olympic selection. Plus a dozen Kenyan/Ethiopian men that were also in the same mode plus I believe it was their national championships. And do they move you dare not blink or you will miss them.
But all our members kept as close as they could to them and at one time were only 100m behind them
THEN the gun went. I waited at the Cutty Sark for 1hr 15 min. then dived under the Thames tunnel
to the 17 mile mark where I thought they would have stopped smiling by then. But no way.
All came past in the same order still looking good and still looking very bouncy. Justin still nicely in command of his pace, Jason looking fresh still and upright. Phil also looked content and comfortable.
Paul Dennis slightly back from Phil this time but still looking confident with his pace.
Laura was having a blinder at this spot and full of running and on course for a PB if continuing the pace.
Then Ramona who seemed to be holding her own in amongst a group and looking positive for the final 9 miles.
Jaydee had closed the gap on Ramona to 20/30 seconds and looked like her plan was be to start with caution and then build up to a pace she could maintain. Looking very relaxed at this point.
Miche Oldham still in there and her strong up-right style was excellent and herself discipline is definitely a great asset and sure to finish. Michael Baggott not going mad and keeping well with-in his target time that his limited amount of training has allowed. Would make the finish if continuing at the pace he wanted to keep.
Kim Warner came along having stopped to chat to Jaydee’s husband Tom and Dad who were busy at the 15 mile water station.
Mike Warner 0/55 our oldest member running was back after a week off with a virus. Mike will never run
without wearing his orange & green vest and orange baseball cap. You can pick him out with ease.
A great club man for over 30 years and is also a very good runner with some excellent performances to his credit and as usual 100% certain to finish. Well done Mike. Unfortunately I did not know new member Anne Atkins was running so missed her completely.
I stayed at 17 mile for 2hr 30min then slowly wobbled home. And although the runners had spread out slightly more I still did not see Kim or Adrian or Sally Stubbs.
I must visit SPECSAVERS unless they saw me and HID. But they better off without my advice.
Full Results: Justin Mitchell was 204th out of 37,000 in 2.41.15, Jason Harris 2.44.56 PB,
Phil Cross 2.54.57, Paul Dennis 2.56.00 PB, Laura Hales 3.09.52 PB, Michael Baggott 3.17.06 PB,
Miche Oldham 3.17.38 PB, Ramona Thevenet 3.19.32, Jaydee Hunt 3.20.47 PB, Adrian Brookes 3.24.38,
Kim Warner 3.41.47, Mike Warner 4.23.38, Anne Atkins 5.36.35 and Sally Stubbs 3.13.23. Those achieving club standards were: Justin, Jason, Phil/Laura and Ramona.
Brighton Marathon 15th April. We had two members running out of the 20,000 odd that finished. Kim Warner 0/50 having a dummy run (Warming-up) a week before running the London, ran a nicely paced run to finish 787th in a time of 3.29.48.
Fiona Bishop 0/50 who had a London rejection slip decided on the next best marathon and ran Brighton and did very well on the sparse amount of training she is able to do owing to work commitments. How? Built in determination! Whatever well done Fiona who finished 5253rd in a time of 4.38.05.
Richmond Park 10k Easter Sunday 8th AprilClive Hensby now 0/50 (OUCH) ran this event as seriously as he could after 5 years just plodding when he feels OK. And as the saying goes “You don’t lose talent”. Today Clive finished 1st 0/50 and 19th o/a in 40.33.
A couple of weeks training Clive and you could be running 30.33. Well done Clive.
Maidenhead Easter 10 mile 6th AprilLaura Hales was our only member entered. And Laura kept our flag hoisted by finishing 3rd in the ladies 0/35 age group. Considering Laura is 0/40 (Sorry Laura). The first race of the season and already running a PB time of 65.32 (best being 65.42) in the Cabbage Patch, plus the Maidenhead is very hilly compared to the flat Twickenham course. Laura also ducked under the club standard by 5 minutes. Well done Laura. Today 835 finished.
Kingston 8/16 Mile Breakfast Run 1st April.Mike Warner 0/55 was our only runner in either event so Mike chose the hardest and longest as part of his final London countdown (Taper). Mike just broke the two hour barrier by 3 seconds with a time of 1.59.57 well done Mike.
Woking 3 mile 4th April. The 4th pair of organising volunteers kept the flag flying with ease. One of the pair Alan Mayger ran the 3mile course before the start checking for road works etc. While Henke Innenes stayed to book in any that arrived early. Well done to Lawrie Baker running a PB time of 17.09 and finished 2nd fastest on the day. Mike Waine 0/55 being the fastest with 17.03 then Ramona Thevenet 3rd fastest in 18.45.
The three quickest being our members. There were 2 under 18 min, 1 under 19 min and 5 other runners under 20 min.
Daniel Johnson went off first and returned first. Dave Nichols gave Daniel 4min 45s start and when he caught him up then ran with Danny the rest of the way and both finished together. Daniel 25.27 and Dave 20.43.
Then our two 0/68s Fred Bell who ran a good time of 22.10 and entered the funnel 4th on H/C time and
Malcolm Vaughan followed Fred a minute behind in 23.41. Then Heather Johnson our member who
got across the finish line at the Olympic Stadium before Usain Bolt has ran 26.07.
Heather’s friend Patricia Burkett just 10 seconds adrift in 26.17 followed by Bridget Maltby 0/60 in 23.30 a little stiff after spending two weeks sitting in a class room taking exams.
Today Sue Lambert 0/75 of Serpentine R, who we all know as a world class Vet made her second
appearance land lowered her course record by running 23.22. Today 27 finished.
