European Champ’s 4/8th April Jyvaskyia Finland

Iris Holder 0/70 spent Easter competing in this major European champ’s. Travelling Sunday 1st April to arrive Monday with Tuesday acclimatising and with her first event on Wednesday. Iris finished 2nd in the 60m dash in 10.47 just outside her PB of 10.43 quick enough for Silver. 1st in the TJ with 7.15 (Gold) + 2nd in the LJ with 3.15 (Silver). So 3 European medals (1 Gold + 2 Silver) + a week’s Easter holiday sightseeing. can’t be bad.
Vets League. 30th April Portsmouth.

Only two members competed but I have no results. Allan Davidson ran the 5000m and Peter Jackson ran both the 100/200m events their times will be in the next issue.
Southern Athletic League. 21st April Parliament Hill.

The first fixture in the SAL Div.2NE was a little disappointing for stiff opposition but definitely an excellent result and a confident builder. And we ended up 1st team on the day also leading at the top of the division. At each of the five fixtures 4 clubs take part the M/F teams each compete 9 track and 8 field events and points awarded for 1/2/3/4th positions. That is the general layout. The mixed meeting atmosphere seemed better than many years ago when we had trophy and inter club matches with men and ladies all supporting each other. I liked it. Today Kay Trinder bought along a new water proof tent to store kit in and also sit in out of the wind. Glad to say it was not tested as the rain never arrived. Also many thanks to Matt Calder whose knowledge of erecting tents was perfect and in a PB time. The four men/ladies club’s competing were Belgrave, Heathside, Sutton and Woking. Heathside had the most M/F athletes in most of the events that we did. But they were no serious match for the mood and fitness that both our teams were in and as you can see by the amount of 1st places we had. I think we have a very good chance of being near to a promotion position when the season ends. Look at the performances of each one of our athletes before we were in an unbeatable position. And then we covered all events to make sure of finishing 1st on the day. Our travelling officials were Neil & Helen Henderson, Gina Harris, Dave Middleton, Dave Clarke, Christine Chambers and Derek Goode. Plus a few supporters to cheer everyone on. Next stop Hemel Hemstead on 19th May. Ladies Report. Eight ladies competed. The ladies pole vault were first to score maximum points. Natasha Hart and Kay Trinder with two PBs on her debut in the event. Also a big welcome to Clare Maurer U/20 who is joining the club but at the moment waiting for her transfer to go through so was a N/S and cleared 2.90. So we have a very strong trio of PV ladies. And thanks to Nick Phipps who coaches them and who travelled there with son Jack. Nick helping the PV officials but there also to advise/guide our three girls plus he also brought along a bag full of fairy cakes for all to enjoy. A very strong 100/200m partnership of Vicky Hewett “A” and U/20 Catherine Thomas “B” both scoring max points. Vicky then ran the 400 to finish 1st “A” with Helena Corbin 1st “B” max points. Vicky tried the HJ and finished 2nd “B” with 1.00m. Helena ran the 800 and was 1st “A” with Jenna Tarrant 2nd “B” who was preparing for a very busy after noon. Jenna running the 1500m almost hand-in-hand with Kay Trinder and both finishing in 2nd A/B place with identical times. Then they both ran the 3000m with Kay 2nd “A” and Jenna 1st “B” but separated by 20 seconds this time. Then they both covered the 1500S/C and with the (hose pipe ban) no water jump so they had to just ran round the side Kay was 2nd “A” Jenna 1st “B”. And again looked like a synchronised team. Jenna made her debut in the LJ and was 4th with PB of 2.76. We had no 400H cover (Come back Isabelle). But Natasha covered the 100H as usual but this time alone as no Isabelle again. Our pole vault pair Natasha and Kay paired up again in the triple jump Natasha finished 2nd while Kay was 1st “B” and another PB. Eleanor Gatrell and Anita Cryer Cover A/B in Ham/Disc/SP/and Jav. Eleanor was 1st in HJ too their performances included five 1st, three 2nd, and one 4th. A big haul of points between them. Unfortunately a pulled muscle on the final leg of the 4x100R so we DNF. And the girls did not enter the 4x400R as they had a very big winning margin and had all worked so hard all afternoon. Full Results Vicky Hewett 1st 100m in 12.9 + 1st 200m in 26.34 + 1st 400m in 57.8 + 2nd B in HJ with 1.00m. Catherine Thomas 1st B 100m in 14.1 + 1st B 200m in 28.9. With 38.90 + 1st in DT with 38.56 + 1st in SP with 15.23 PLUS 4th in JT with 23.54 + 2nd in HJ with 1.25. Anita Cryer 1st B inHam. with 25.25 + 1st in SP with 8.00 + 2nd B in DT with 11.49 PLUS 2nd B in JT with 17.69. And Clare Maurer who was N/S in the PV event with the highest of the day with 1.90. Men’s Report: Ten men competed Ollie King made running the 100/200m so easy to score max points in both events. So Tim Kuria copied him in the B string 100/200 with max points. Tim then teamed up with U/20 Josh King in the 400m and this being Tim’s favourite event showed us how to win while Josh running his first ever 400m race finished 2nd B and seemed blessed with the same natural sprint talent as Brother Ollie. Middle distance lads had a busy afternoon. Captain Craig Holder ran the B 1500m helping out between organising and checking the other lads were moving about from field event to field event and track events. A full time job. Some were really dashing from here/there and everywhere. Gilbert Grundy after running the 1500 with Craig then joined up with Matthew Calder and took on the 800/5000 both achieving a PB in the 5000m. They carried on in the 2000S/C but again without any water just ran around the barrier like the girls did (Cheating). Gilbert also tackled the 400H before calling it a day. Craig then reminded Roy Chambers and Kaspar Kazemaks who were busy competing in other events to dash over and run the 110H. Then Kasper carried on in the pole vault event LJ/JT/ HJ/SP and Disc. While Roy did almost the same in the HJ/SP/JT/LJ/TJ. Paul Kelly kept popping out into the arena to throw the Hammer and Discus. Nick Phipps helping at the PV event left to accompany Paul in the Hammer. And Jack Phipps who was assisting the girls with some Pole vault technique’s then competed and won the men’s PV event before joining Roy in the javelin event. Then finally the relays. In the 4x100 on the first change over the baton went a different way to what was intended. But as it happened behind the discus cage we couldn’t see what happened. In the 4x400 we had a very strong quartet with Ollie flying away and well in the lead by the 100m mark. Then Kaspar a very strong all round athlete gained slightly before handing to young Josh who definitely increased the distance between 1st and 2nd positions and the final leg was Tim and NO ONE can give him a 20/30m lead and hope to catch him. Very good hand/over’s. Josh King ran N/S in the 200m and finished 3rd out of the 7 running. Well done lads. Full Results. Ollie King 1st in 100m in 11.4 + 1st in 200m in 22.7. Crawley Open 8th April

With 19 -100m races the time table fell to bits and Crawley had to start having mixed age and M/F events to try and get back on time. But it wasn’t that easy and some races were ½hr late starting. Helena Corbin won her 400 race in 59.81. Jenna Tarrant had a busy afternoon not only racing but also hanging about to race. In the 800m Jenna ran 2.49.90, then in a mixed 1500m race Jenna was in the same race as Gilbert and Jenna pleased not to be lapped by him. Jenna’s time was 5.28.13 and Gilbert running a PB time of 4.12.83.
Basingstoke Open 7th April

Our youngsters are preparing well for the County Champ’s in May competing at Bracknell and Watford today. Katrina Francis U/15 was 2nd in the 100m with a SB time of 13.78 + 4th in the 200m with 28.47. Rachel Woods U/15 starting the season off with two PBs. 2nd in 300m with 50.84 and 1st in the HJ with 1.40PB + and threw 18.16 in the Jav. Watford Open Evening Meeting 4th April

Six of our younger lads travelled the 60mile round trip thanks to the driver Les Calder. All preparing for the Surreys Champ’s in May. Having just completed a season of XC they are now changing their strength into speed. There were many graded sprint and medium distance races with some events having as many as 12/15 entries. Adam Tolefree U/17 was 9th in an 800m race clocking 2.37.09. Christian Beale was 4th in his 800m event in 2.14.68. Matthew Calder U/23 ran 2.14.02 in his 800m. Gilbert Grundy U/23 was 8th out of 15 in his 3000m event and finished in 8.58.95. These are very respectable times so early in the season and during a cold late evening. Well done lads.
